“Lovely stay at Aldwark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

Lovely birthday surprise booked by my husband in March, hotel lovely and food superb - I think the steak was one of the nicest my husband has ever had in any restaurant!
Our room was in the older part of the hotel and was very quaint, very big room with old wooden beams and old fashioned windows. My only very slight criticism would be that the bathroom and furnishings could do with a refresh, but everything was clean and comfortable.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, in particular one of the duty managers who looked after us in the bar and restaurant (sorry, i didn't catch his name but he was originally from Liverpool). The pool and jacuzzi area were very welcome on a cold wintry day. We would definitely recommend and I'm sure we'll be going back there again.

I am overjoyed that your stay with us on such a special occasion was so enjoyable. We have only recently appointed a new head chef who is settling into the business well so I am sure your comments about his food will be taken with immense gratitude. Thank you also for the kind comments about our wonderful staff.

Our stay at aldwark manor was extremely disappointing!! Upon arriving we initially thought it looked very impressive....fantastic landscaped grounds!! However it was a false pretence.....the spa area was filthy....windows and glass area's dirty both in and out...you expect to have a nice view onto the gardens not looking at dirty windows. We were initially only given a towel had to ask for gowns!! There was poor refreshments in the spa area. Expected fresh fruit being offered and jugs of fresh water...but nothing! Again the windows dirty with mouse traps in full view. The floors were dirty crumbs everywhere...the tables dirty with glass marks! All of which made it feel that the place was dirty. Feel staff in spa need to be more attentive. Our first room was dirty...we even had a rusty bath...the phone fell to bits when I tried to ring reception...they did move us to a better room and the porter was very friendly. Majority of the staff were helpful in-particular restaurant supervisor who unfortunately got the earache after we nearly waited a hour for our main course meal. As a form of compensation we got a free bottle of wine and pudding. Overall the staff were very well presented and helpful. This place could do so much better...it needs a trouble shooter to go in and turn it around!! Would not say this is a four star!! We've stayed in a lot of hotels and are experienced enough to compare.

Thank you for your comments. It is always disappointing to hear when our guests have had a bad experience within our hotel. We do make every effort to deliver exceptional service to all our guests but clearly on this occasion we have not. Over the last few weeks we have experienced high volume within our leisure and spa. This has lead us to review our physical capabilities and restrict some of our promotions thus to ensure we are able to deliver the standards expected within our hotel. If you would like to discuss this further with me please contact me on khowe@qhotelks.co.uk.

A character hotel which was very welcoming and provided a very good level of service during our stay which included BB + dinner and 2 rounds of Golf. The Golf course is a good test of Golf without being too physically demanding. Considering the floods last year and the recent snow the course was in good condition ( hope the greens recover). The hotel rooms were very clean and provided all the equipment needed for an overnight stay. Free use of the spa, swimming pool and gym were included in the price along with dinner which was 3 courses of a good standard. Breakfast was well presented and of good quality. Overall a great stay.

Dear Peter,
Many thanks for your review. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your short stay with us and found our golf course to be a good test but not physically demanding. It is also reassuring that our food offering was to a high standard and was able to meet you needs. Thank you for your kind recommendation and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Arrived early at the hotel, an our room was not ready, but in fairness check in is at 3pm, we arrived at 2pm. Did paperwork so when room ready it would be easier.
We were not advised by the receptionist where the restaurant was, bar was no nothing, so it was a case of walking around trying to find things. Found the bar had a drink and listened to the bar staff talking about their hangovers from BH Sunday and how the Guinness 'here' is way too gassy and is rubbish.
We had a feature room, which online, where I booked, said we would get a newspaper, no mention of it nor no sign of it?
Room was comfortable enough, room 206, although the cob webs around the curtains need looking at and the chrome in the bathroom was just stained with water marks.
Only 2 sachets of coffee which is not enough, shouldn't have to keep calling reception to ask.
We were on a DBB rate, all in all for the one night it was £200. The food was no where near what I would class as 2AA rosette, starters too small, main course was the smallest portion I have ever had, dessert was a chocolate fondant and by the taste of the outside of it, the tin must have accidentally been lined with salt rather than sugar...salty chocolate fondant. Also the 'honeycomb' ice cream was vanilla with honeycomb sprinkled round it, that is not honeycomb ice cream.
Breakfast ok, not very warm.
Shame really about the niggly bits but when it is £200 for one night, I expect a little bit more.

Thank you for you feedback it is disappointing to find that your stay was not to the standard you desired. Our Food and Beverage team work tirelessly to ensure they provide the best possible food and service to our guests so it is discouraging to hear you did not enjoy our food offering. Currently was do not hold any Rosettes however this is something we are aiming for within the future. Thank you for your constructive comments.

This is the third time we have stayed at Aldwark, and yet again thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We opted for a treatment in the spa on our first day (hot stone massage) which was fab followed by a relaxing evening meal. Day 2 & 3 we enjoyed the hotels leisure facilities (gym, sauna, pool, steam room). What we particularly liked about the pool was that even though children are allowed, there are set times for them to use it, so that it is possible to have a relaxing swim without being dive bombed. Evening meals on further two nights were well presented (chicken chasseur, quail, steak and burger) and even got a recipe from the chef. Whilst some people may think that Aldwark is some distance out of York city centre (11miles), it enables you to enjoy the country walks around the hotel, plus the park and ride facility is a godsend at £5.20 return for 2 adults it's not worth the agro of driving into the city centre. Staff are also very friendly and very helpful.

Dear Debby

Thank you very much for posting a very positive review following you third visit to Aldwark .We were so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us yet again as you are valued returning guests.

I was delighted that you found the staff friendly and helpful and that they helped to make your stay with us memorable.

It was lovely to read that you were able to relax and unwind in the spa and leisure facilities and that the treatment was a great experience. We do pride ourselves on the customer journey in this area as it is important to remember that we cater for both children and adults and it is only fair we control our swim times so that everyone can enjoy the facilities we offer.

In respect of the food the chef was pleased that your meals met your expectations and he was wondering if the recipe he gave you worked ?He is hoping so ......

It was great that you mentioned the location as people often think Aldwark is in then middle of nowhere but actually is is very near to the major roads of the A19 and A59 , so it is a good hotel to base yourself from to explore York and the surrounding area.

We do hope that you will return for a fourth stay in the near future and we very much look forward to welcoming you back .

Kind Regards

We met at the aldwark with some friends
Had a lovely visit the staff all of them courteous and couldn't do enough, genuine!!!
The spa hot tub was lovely but may have had a little bit too much chlorine in it!!!
Maybe a little bit of background music would have been nice in the dining room at dinner. But the food was absolutely gorgeous and catered for all our varied taste!!
Would always recommend aldwark manor in beautiful grounds plenty to do and see thankyou for having us!!

Dear Guest

We were delighted to read such a positive review following your stay with friends at Aldwark. It was a pleasure to note that you found the staff all to be courteous , genuine and couldn't do enough for you ,all adding up to a lovely stay. Your comments have been passed onto the team and they are very happy that you enjoyed you time with us.

I was pleased that you were able to relax and unwind in the Spa hot tub, I have passed your comments onto the leisure manager who has checked the chlorine levels for that day and they were within the safe limits for operation , but I thank you for bringing it to our attention.

In respect of the Brasserie, the chef was encouraged that you found the food of high quality and tasty as it is a new varied menu which I have to say is going down very well with our guests and he thanks you for your comments.

I would like to thank you so much for posting the review, it is very welcome and it was a pleasure to have you here a valued guests and I do hope you will visit us again in the near future.
