Reviewed April 4, 2013

This is the third time we have stayed at Aldwark, and yet again thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We opted for a treatment in the spa on our first day (hot stone massage) which was fab followed by a relaxing evening meal. Day 2 & 3 we enjoyed the hotels leisure facilities (gym, sauna, pool, steam room). What we particularly liked about the pool was that even though children are allowed, there are set times for them to use it, so that it is possible to have a relaxing swim without being dive bombed. Evening meals on further two nights were well presented (chicken chasseur, quail, steak and burger) and even got a recipe from the chef. Whilst some people may think that Aldwark is some distance out of York city centre (11miles), it enables you to enjoy the country walks around the hotel, plus the park and ride facility is a godsend at £5.20 return for 2 adults it's not worth the agro of driving into the city centre. Staff are also very friendly and very helpful.

Dear Debby

Thank you very much for posting a very positive review following you third visit to Aldwark .We were so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us yet again as you are valued returning guests.

I was delighted that you found the staff friendly and helpful and that they helped to make your stay with us memorable.

It was lovely to read that you were able to relax and unwind in the spa and leisure facilities and that the treatment was a great experience. We do pride ourselves on the customer journey in this area as it is important to remember that we cater for both children and adults and it is only fair we control our swim times so that everyone can enjoy the facilities we offer.

In respect of the food the chef was pleased that your meals met your expectations and he was wondering if the recipe he gave you worked ?He is hoping so ......

It was great that you mentioned the location as people often think Aldwark is in then middle of nowhere but actually is is very near to the major roads of the A19 and A59 , so it is a good hotel to base yourself from to explore York and the surrounding area.

We do hope that you will return for a fourth stay in the near future and we very much look forward to welcoming you back .

Kind Regards

We met at the aldwark with some friends
Had a lovely visit the staff all of them courteous and couldn't do enough, genuine!!!
The spa hot tub was lovely but may have had a little bit too much chlorine in it!!!
Maybe a little bit of background music would have been nice in the dining room at dinner. But the food was absolutely gorgeous and catered for all our varied taste!!
Would always recommend aldwark manor in beautiful grounds plenty to do and see thankyou for having us!!

We booked a Qstar room as it was our anniversary. We were certainly not disappointed! The room we had as on 2 floors with the bedroom on the mezzanine level. The lounge had sofas and chairs, coffee table desks, full internet, Sky tv. The bathroom was spacious and the shower powerful. Nice toiletries. Thecoffee and tea provided were high quality (real ground coffee in a disposable filter) and there was a free minibar! A lovely comfy bed. We ate breakfast but no other meals because of our itinery. Staff were very polite obliging and pleasant, We were extremely comfortable and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Room 312 is excellent with mezzanine bedroom

The staff at this hotel are probably one of the best teams we have encountered, not one thing to say negative about them.

We had a Q room in the old section of the hotel, over looking the fountain, well maintained and clean , the bathroom was beautiful and the bath robes were much appreciated.

We enjoyed the pool and sauna and all areas seemed to be clean and well maintained.

Breakfast is buffet style for hot and cold dishes, lots of choice and of good quality, you can also order specials eg poached eggs but found we had to beckon a waitress to ask for these as no one approached us once we had been directed to a table, our morning drink order was taken on route to the table, we would have liked to have been seated and given time to peruse the menu.

I suppose the biggest let down for us was the evening meal, our package allowed us £26 each towards dinner, this is probably just enough to cover three cheapest courses.
Whilst we have no objections to paying for a decent meal or extras we begrudge paying £3 for 6 chips.
Grilled chicken breast, 3 tiny new potatoes, a few baby carrots and two bits of broccoli cost £15 , the chicken was very dry and would have took very little skill to produce, we really think the quality is playing second fiddle to presentation, food has to taste good as well as look good.

Would we stay here again? Yes but would opt for bed and breakfast only .

Dear Sheffield Sparky

Thank you so much for your positive comments in respect of our team here at Aldwark. We pride ourselves on our warmth , friendliness and professionalism driven by staff who are passionate about hospitality and customer service and this shines through. Your comments are very much appreciated and will be passed on to the staff.

We were delighted that the room met your expectations . The Q star rooms have lovely features in the old part of the Manor and tend to be more spacious with good views and lots of added extras such as the fluffy robes.

Your comments re breakfast have been passed onto the Restaurant Manager so we can improve our service during extra busy times to ensure a better all round experience. We were pleased to note that you found the food offering to be of good quality with a varied choice.

We were disappointed that you felt the evening dining experience let us down, as we have enjoyed very positive comments lately and we sincerely appolgise that it did not meet with your expectations. The menu is an extensive A La Carte menu and there a four starters , four mains and four desserts that add up to £26. Most guests enjoy the freedom of having an amount towards dinner as sometimes they don't want 3 courses they only want 2 courses and the allocation means they can spend it on whatever dishes they would like. However we have taken your comments on board with a view to increasing the number of dishes so we can offer more choices within the £26 limit at our next menu review. The chef has also been made aware of the quality issues you have raised and will address them with his team.

I was very pleased to read that you would stay with us again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future where we can show you the improvements we have made on the back of your comments.

Kind Regards

Just returned from a two day spa break at Aldwark Manor. From the moment my friend arrived to the time we left we were made to feel welcome.
On arrival we were shown a twin room at the rear of the hotel overlooking the rooftop. After speaking to the very polite male receptionist we were shown to a beautiful room with views of the golf course.
Arrangements were made at the spa for inclusive package treatments for the following day. We then had a beautiful stroll around the grounds before dinner. The package allowed £26 to be spent in the restaurant per day.
The chicken meal wasn't very good, in fact it looked like leftovers from a buffet! A word to the manager and we immediately received a complementary glass of wine and a replacement meal.
Nothing was too much trouble. The staff were wonderful, from the maid to the spa beauticians to the reception and management.
I would recommend without hesitation this beautiful, comfortable hotel.

Dear Anna

Thank you for your very positive to review following your recent Spa break at Aldwark. Your comments are much appreciated and are shared with our management team and staff.

Once again the friendliness from our team across all departments shines through and Iam so glad you felt welcome from the moment you arrived.

Iam so pleased that we were able to accommodate you in one of our rooms overlooking the golf course . They are lovely and comfortable with great views which we hope you enjoyed. I also note that you had a stroll in the grounds before dinner which is a great way to unwind and enjoy the countryside.

We sincerely appolgise that your meal was not to your liking , it is rare to receive a complaint especially as we have a new chef team in place and please be assured that all our dishes are cooked fresh to order. However we are here to look after you first and foremost and I was pleased to note that we offered you a glass of wine whilst a new meal was prepared for you.

Thank you for recommending our beautiful hotel and I very much hope you will visit us again in the near future.

Our room (a Q room, number 301) was amazing...huge with a king size bed, complimentary bar and, best of all, a beautiful balcony with a stunning view.
Unfortunately, dinner that night was a disaster. The chef is trying to produce Michelin style food with poor quality ingredients and basic cooking skills. Among the disappointments were raw scallops, a burnt cauliflower puree, a steak that was ordered well done and arrived pink and a lamb dish which was 75% raw fat. Everything was virtually inedible and both main courses were returned uneaten.
A couple on the table next to us had to ask for sharper knives to saw through their tough steaks and another couple swapped main courses because one was inedible.
The restaurant was half empty with half the tables already set for breakfast for the next morning.
The restaurant manager had an unusual style to say the least. He informed us, totally out of the blue, that he had been regularly 'battered' by customers in the previous place that he worked, and he told the two customers next to us that the wine they had ordered was 'rough as....'.
Our comments about our meal were ignored, except to inform us that we could have complimentary chips. The chips were served as an included accompaniment to the steak, so that made no sense.
I did get the price of the two mains refunded the next morning.
Breakfast was similarly shambolic. Why on earth serve breakfast to order from the kitchen but then tell people to make their own toast? Customers were left queuing at the toaster while their breakfasts went cold on the table.
My breakfast had one sausage, one tiny rasher of bacon and a completely burnt black tomato.
This hotel is in a beautiful setting, most of the staff are lovely, but the restaurant completely lets it down, and ruined our stay. We would definitely not return, nor would we recommend it.
My advice is for the chef to be replaced, and to concentrate on well cooked quality food. The hotel claims to offer 'fine dining' which is ridiculous when the menu includes burgers and fish and chips.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post a review following you recent stay at Aldwark . Your feedback is important to us , so we may improve our customer service in the future..

Firstly I was pleased to note that you felt your Q star room was fabulous. It is a great room with all those little added extras and a beautiful balcony and Iam glad you found the room comfortable . As you said the hotel is in a beautiful setting and the staff were lovely and I thank you for your kind comments.

The chef and food service team were very disappointed to read about your poor dining experience in the Brasserie and are very sorry that you meals and service did not meet with expectations.
We were very busy that evening and the kitchen team were under more pressure than normal due to a number of private functions taking place within the hotel dining at the same time as those guests in the restaurant , but in hindsight we should have been better organized.
Occasionally we get it wrong as in the meals we served to you and unfortunately all we can do is learn from the mistakes we make.
It is disappointing feedback for us as we also had very good comments about the food that evening and served many portions of scallops , lamb and steak with no negative comments. I feel the situation on this evening is very unusual as opposed to the norm and once again we do appolgise .Please be assured your comments have been taken seriously and will be acted upon.
The Restaurant Manager to which you refer was not the actual manager but a supervisor and this was his last night working with us. It was highly unprofessional of him to make these comments and I have to say very unlike him. All I can say is that he has now left the business so Iam not anticipating this behavior will repeat itself in the future. I was happy to see that the right action was taken in respect of your complaint and your meals were refunded.

In respect of breakfast this is the first negative comment we have received about guests making their own toast . Many hotels operate such a system and generally it works well. It is unusual for breakfasts to be left on the table going cold whilst guests make toast ,as most guests make their toast when helping themselves to the cold buffet whilst waiting for the hot breakfast to arrive. However once again we have taken your comments on board and will review our operations.

I can appreciate why you would not want to return following your experiences , however this really was not indicative of what the hotel offers as you will read in other recent reviews who all speak very highly of the food quality and operations. Once again we sincerely appolgise for the situation . Due to the fact that this was not the norm for us, we will not be replacing the chef , but we will of course learn from your comments.

In respect of fine dining I have run many rosette awarded fine dine restaurants and it is entirely possible to win accolades with technically well prepared dishes such as fish and chips and burgers providing you use good quality ingredients. We always source the best ingredients for our menus so we may provide a quality offering.

I do hope that I have been able to answer all your comments fully and hope you will give us the chance and return one day to show you how Aldwark can deliver a good standard of food and service .

Should you wish to discuss matters further please do not hesitate to contact me personally.

Kind Regards

Kay Harrison-Mann
