“Pleasantly Surprised”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

I arrived for 1 night on business, unfortunately down the wrong approach road as the brown tourist sign on the main road was not very visible so watch out for it on dark nights. The reception was quite dated and in need of updating, and somewhat drab but the receptionist was very helpful. Be aware the car park is about 200 mtrs from reception and in winter, the walk is very dark and may be wet.
My room, 103, was clean and contemporary, very spacious and I was happy with the facilities. I understand that some of the rooms have been recently updated and can only assume that this was a refurbished room. The king bed was comfortable and with linen that was sadly holed.
Dinner was ‘fashionable’ and I enjoyed all three courses, with drinks at a reasonable price. Service was friendly and attentive. Breakfast the following morning was also quite good although I didn't try the cooked option, again with very courteous staff.
With only 1 week to go to Christmas I was looking forward to a Yorkshire Christmas welcome and sad to say I feel the management must have spent all of 50 quid on making the place feel festive. Could do better on this point in my view.
When visiting York, Aldwark Manor is certainly worth a try if you are happy with the very rural setting and I know I will be visiting again when in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for an updated room on the rear as they have superior views over the contrysude

We stayed in room 407, on Sunday Dec.9th.
On arrival I did not get the discount or any rewards with my Q card when offerd to the receptionist, neither were we informed about the need to book a time for an Evening meal in the restaurant. Hence when we went to eat and asked if we had booked it resulted in a wait in the bar until collected.
The room could have been cleaner - the carpet was stained, the ceiling light dirty and dusty(particularly the flex). The curtains were hanging off the rail at both outer ends. Should there have been bottled water in the room?
The restaurant staff were courteous, service good and the food worth waiting for.

Driving down the narrow road the hotel is reached after passing through the golf course. Having entered the old part of the hotel housing the reception, bar and lounge the bedrooms are found in the new extension to the hotel. Very comfortable room -normally I have problems sleeping the first night in any hotel but not this one -breakfast was served in the restaurant and the choice of dishes was exciting and well enjoyed

I have one but.....but the room was heated by a wall mounted electric heater and I spent the first three hours with my winter jacket on trying to get warm -the room was so big it took that long to get the temperature up -nearly considered that I had made a big mistake staying here on a cold winters night

We stayed at Aldwark Manor in January and February 2012 and had a wonderful time, every thing was very good, We stayed in the Wensleydale Suite and it was extremely comfortable, the food was of a very high quality and the service was good.
We have just stayed again this weekend, in the same Suite and OH dear standards have Definitely dropped. The Suite was grubby, it was obvious that the stairs to the bedroom had never seen a hoover and flies, the room was infested with large flies, the whole place needed a good clean. The quality of the food had deteriorated, it was only very average and the service at breakfast was poor. I wouldn't normally complain but I paid £240 for that 1 night stay.

Room Tip: Stay at a different Hotel

I am laid in bed right now writing this review gutted I opted for two nights here over one night somewhere a little more maintained & accomodating.

This isnt a manor or a spa hotel, its not as good as a lot of Premier Inn hotels at the side of the M1 & the "spa" is just a gym pool with old broken facilities such as a sauna (very dirty) and a jacuzzi. The spa area was in disrepair, my Wife & I had to change together in the dsabled toilets which was also the main entrance to the pool from the lounge which is quite bizarre.

This place looks favourable compared to proper sa hotels as it comes in a few quid cheaper, however you get what you pay for & unfortunately this for me was false economy.

My first visit to a Q Hotel and I reckon this is one of the best.

Tucked away in the North Yorkshire countryside, beautiful surroundings and a bueatiful building.

The bedroom was massive and comfortable, and the bathroom was a decent size too!

The food in the al a carte was stunning, the pool and sauna / steam rooms were good, and there were spa treatments and gym equipment available (but we didn't use).

Would love to stay here again.

We were a party of eight having a company Christmas party with an overnight stay.
Firstly can I say the room we had (203) was great I would reccommend this room, however I ordered room service (chicken salad sandwich & a club sandwich) Came quickly although the chicken salad bread was dry lots & lots of lettuce, small amount of tomato, cheap chicken slices, cost £6.95, club sandwich was ok costing £9.95, not good value for the quality of food. Our main meal in the party room was not good either, I had the Hake, totally overcooked & so dry with three little potatoes on a layer of greens, unacceptable small portioned not four star food.
Main problem was understaffed in the bar, too young & unexperience employees for that type of hotel? The drinks that came out of the bar chillers were not cold & crisp, had to put ice in to chill down. There was a wedding taking place at the same time in the hotel so most of the staffs attention was with them!!
Breakfast, understaffed the ones that were working were rush off their feet, the breakfast room was a mess, nowhere to sit, nothing cleared away. My bacon was raw, could not believe it, scrambled egg was undercooked majorly, I can go on & on. All this cost a large amount of money. This needs looking at seriously!!
