“Beautiful place and incredible food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014 via mobile

I stayed in Abisko tourist station for one night in the dorm accommodation. The accommodation is fairly basic but clean.

I are dinner in the restaurant which was absolutely delicious! Beautiful herbed pork with carrot purée and delicious bread. If you are tight on budget just have the main meal as there is plenty and a whole breadbasket if it doesn't fill you up.

In the evening I climbed the adjacent mountain to see the midnight sun. It was a stunning clean night and the reflections on the lake were perfect. It's about a 2hr hike up or you can take the chair lift (220kr) so it's up to you. Walking is free.

Overall a wonderful experience but slightly pricey.

We did not stay, just stopped briefly on our way to hike the Kungsleden. The facilities looks pretty nice but what stood out was the store. It was well stocked and equipped with all those last minute items that you needed for provisions. Food: staples like pasta, canned meats, dried foods etc. Fuel: both liquid and gas. Some camping items like maps. And clothes... including waterproofs, socks etc (although some of these were more winter orientated. So its an excellent place to stop and check (and weigh) your gear before setting off towards Abisko Jaure. We caught the train from Kiruna which was very scenic and got off at the dedicated station (the second Abisko stop). And of course you can stay here and eat here if that is what you prefer to start your trip.

We camped for 1 night at the campground run by the Abisko Turiststation. We pitched our tent in the only flat-ish, non rocky section we could find. The facilities were basic but clean. We just thought for 110 SEK (approx $22) per person we didn't get much for our money. On a plus, we were allowed to hang out in the Turiststation hut in the evening and use the free wifi. The staff were all very helpful too.

Flew in via Stockholm airport to Kiruna airport and had a wonderful ice landing. It was a short 30 minute via taxi ride to Abisko. (we booked through the tel no of city taxi kiruna, which charged lower than other companies, took a hard time to get them via telephone as they do not have email booking).
It was a smooth check in and the group of us were given rooms with views of the mountain and lake. The receptionists on all days of our two night stays were friendly and informative.
We took the renovated rooms that cost slightly more, though the rooms and bathroom were abit small, but it was a comfy place to be at.
Most of the information and activities were pinned up on their notice board located at the reception area. There is also a shop that sells and rents winter gears.

We had booked the aurora sky station tour for the first night, we went by foot and followed the map given by the reception. Took us about 20 min walk and do wrap yourself in layers and cover your face as it was freezing cold at night.
We were given full winter overalls and boots to change into before we ascended to the top of the sky station. We did not manage to catch the lights though it was clear and sky was filled with stars. There is a small cafe and chill out area at the sky station, so you could wait inside and keep warm during the wait.

The restaurant has a great selection of breakfast every morning, which we already paid for in advance. We were excited to try their cuisine of deer meat and moose meat, both i thought tasted yummy.

There were also warm waiting rooms with glass viewing panel facing the frozen lake, where you could snuggle into the arm chair and wait for the lights to appear. We did this on the second night, and praise lord i was jumping around with joy when the lights did come out around 10.30pm. We had saw some stars or light collision one hour before the lights came, hence not sure if that was a sign.

Highly recommend first timer to Abisko to try out this place, they seem to be the nearest resort that you can reach aurora sky station by walk. And by the way, the dates ard 20th march is good for lights viewing. Abisko is a place that has clear sky as what other fellow forummer has reviewed before and hence very high hits. (i confirmed this myself after visiting Tromso, Norway)

Room Tip: For northern light views from room, request for those that faces the mountain on the left side of th...

i did not stay at Abisko Turiststation, but we went there for the set menu. When you enter into the building and the restaurant you don't expect to much - it look's simple - BUT you get your life surprise when the food and wine come to the table.
There is weekly set menu's with wine package and the quality is excellent - it is like any high class restaurant in any world cities. The price was 325 SEK for a three course meal and 125 SEK for the wine package.
If you are in the area - book one night for dinner here.

Eating out is not cheap in this area, however we found this buffet great value, the price was good, the food was excellent, and the view exceptional!
NB we didn't stay here, just stopped in for lunch after a lovely scenic walk down the gorge, around the lakeshore (over the ice) and back.

Abisko is in the arctic circle of Sweden Lappland and this hotel is one of few places to stay. Our stay was part of a packaged tour to see and photograph the northern lights. We stayed here 4 nights. We expected basic accommodations after reading reviews so we did not expect even 3 star amenities. Our room was on the second floor on the end at the top of the stairs, I think it was either 20 or 21. But ask for the end room as it was larger than others. It had a great view out the window of the lake in the distance. It also was not noisy there. The rooms are sparsely decorated and modern…very swedish in that regard. Two twin beds pushed together and just a duvet and blanket to cover you as is typical in Europe. But the room had all we needed, even an electric kettle.
Some things to take note of is they do not supply wash cloths, again typical of Europe, and they do not change out towels daily. The housekeeping is bare bones. Our boots would bring in dust and mud which would dry and make the floor very gritty and dirty to walk on. I'm not sure they swept it everyday, but I found where the housekeeping closet was and borrowed the broom to sweep.
Also, the bar down at the reception window will not allow you to take a glass of wine to your room. So if you want to drink in your room, bring your own. But the reception staff are nice and helpful and their are loads of places to sit and read, enjoy a drink or coffee, or look out to the view. My only complaint is that even though it was cold, they do not keep a lit fire going. You are lucky if it is lit and tended to in the evening. Often we found ourself tending the fire.
The food was quite good and lots of choices during the breakfast and lunch buffet. The evening meals are served to you and are also good; but portions small and often without any vegetables. Mostly a meat and potato main dish. Also the service was incredibly slow and very disorganized. They definitely need to hire more wait staff and train on how to serve "first come first served". Several times our photo tour group had to leave before our dessert was served so we could be ready to leave on our nightly aurora tour. Having paid for that dessert and not getting it, is disappointing. It all points back to how understaffed and unorganized the restaurant evening dining room service is. Other than that the wait staff are lovely and warm people.

Room Tip: our room which had a view of the lake and was on the end of the second floor in the main building wa...
