This was one of the "tourist" things I had not done in Albania. I did it as a day trip using public buses.

From Tirana I left on an early bus to Fier (they leave frequently - I think every 30 minutes from the "southern bus lot" at the Eagle Square entering Tirana). Bus ride is approx. 2 hours.

In Fier you will take the city bus for 50 lek to the small village of Pojan. (the bus leaves on the main road going west RR Brigade IX Sulmuese at Rr Leon Rei) pretty much hourly - on the hour (on the 1/2 hour on the way back).

In Pojan, follow the signs (and European Tour Busses) up the mountain top - 15-20 minute walk.

Although I did not eat there, there are two restaurants/bars in the complex. One as you enter and the other one at the very top of the mountain.

I took the 1:30 bus back from Pojan, the 2:30 bus from the "Train station" in Fier and was back in Tirana by 5.

It is definitely worth the trip.

Thank Hans S

Located on the right bank of the Vjosë river, The ruins Apollonia are one of the top 'Archaeological parks' to visit within Albania. A short bus ride from the uninspiring city of Fier (the only city to which you can connect with local transport network), Apollonia was (in its heyday) an important centre of trade and learning, mentioned by the likes of Aristotle, Strabo and Cicero. The visible remains are a testament to that wealth and success. The main sights to see while in the park include Monument of Agonothetes, the city council building (and symbol of Albanian archaeology), The Byzantine Church of Saint Mary in Apollonia and the Museum to the city (all included in the entry ticket). While not as well preserved as Buthrotum, Apollonia is worth your time and is not too far from Ardenica Monastery (if you have a car) to make a whole day trip of it. 'Point to remember', if you have no transport the Local bus STOP after Lunchtime, so if you still wish to see the Apollonia, book a local Taxi (about 500 Leke) from the restaurant by the entrance.

This was a really interesting visit. The buildings are worth a visit and the frescoes, although damaged, are remarkable.

A short drive from Fier away, Apollonia is a very nice archaeological site in the Albanian countryside. The road from Fier to Apollonia is partially paved, partially unpaved but fully navigable in a small city car without any major problems. Once there you can visit the small but charming museum displaying artifacts found at the site, as well as the small orthodox church. You can then go on to explore the site itself which presents well preserved ruins scattered across a vast area. As with all archaeological parks in the Mediterranean area, visiting in summer can influence your ability to properly appreciate the site (enter without a hat at own risk) but it is nevertheless well worth it.
