My wife and I stayed for a few nights at the Secret Garden last November. Out of all of the places we stayed on our vacation in Thailand, it was most definitely our favorite. Words and pictures will certainly fail to express how peaceful and beautiful the property is. The bungalos are comfortable, quiet, and wonderfully decorated. The best description for Secret Garden in the evening is magical. The lanterns that light the property are beautiful. Peter and Pai are two of the best hosts we have ever had the pleasure of staying with. They go out of their way to make your stay wonderful. Pai is an AMAZING cook. We always made sure we were back at the hotel for dinner, and we never missed breakfast either. It truly felt like a home away from home. Chiang Mai is a beautiful city with a great deal to offer any type of visitor and if you end up in the city, stay at the Secret Garden and you will have an incredible time! We're sorry it took us so long to review our stay! Thanks again for giving us a wonderful time!

Dear David & Corinne ,
What a nice surprise to hear from you after having been away from our place for 7 months ...that's what makes us kind of proud when people remember us after such a long time . A home away from home , if you felt like this we succeeded in what we want our guests to feel like , thank you very much . Hopefully we will get some more staff next month , so that Pai and I have more time to care for our guests personally .
A warm embrace from Spain to Georgia

We chose the Secret Garden from reviews on TA when we were looking for a relaxing end to a trekking holiday through Sapa and Laos in March 2012. The reviews are not understated. Peter and Pai are excellent hosts and nothing is too much trouble. They will even provide you with a pre-paid phone if required so that you can contact them with any concerns or for pick-ups when you are out exploring Chang Mai. This kind of service is second to none. The bungalows are private and self-contained and surrounded by lovely gardens. Pai is an excellent cook and invites you to watch and participate in her kitchen. They treat you like part of their family. You are situated slightly out of Chang Mai but it is no effort to head into the city. I would highly recommend a stay at the Secret Garden and hope to return soon to be treated to this rare kind of hospitality.

Dear Maree ,
Thanks a lot , we too hope that you can return soon !!
We still enjoy our holidays , watching more TV per day than in one year in Chiang Mai , it's really addictive , good we don't have time for it at home . At the moment we are working on our new menu....it's already printed , but we still have to practice . Did you try out some of Pai's recipes ?
Did they taste like in the Secret Garden ? I always feel that wine and food need a certain environment...a Spanish wine just doesn't taste the same in Thailand .
Thanks again for your review ,
Greetings from Pai and Isabel
Peter

We had the opportunity to stay at the Secret Garden in mid-May and had a wonderful visit. The Secret Garden was beautiful and peaceful. We loved our cottage! Peter, Pai, and Isabel were so attentive and helpful; they made our visit even better. We wish we had more time than the brief few days we were in Chiang Mai so that we could have staid longer to enjoy the terrific surroundings.

We actually stayed at the Secret Garden in April 2009 and had a truly magnificent time. This review is long overdue, but very well deserved. This oasis in chiang mai lives up to all the praise here on tripadvisor... Peter and Pai are both incredibly warm, friendly and welcoming hosts. The bungalows are all lovely and full of charm... From memory we stayed in the Mandalay and were very very happy and comfortable. We'd go back in a heartbeat! If you truly want to escape and unwind, this is the perfect place to do it. Since it is located out of town, you get a true sense of being away from it all. Best to hire a scooter if you want to explore the area independently. Oh and definitely sample Pai's cooking it is divine!

I couldn't believe it when I saw the date : April 2009 , three years ago !! You really made us feel so good , remembering our place after such a long time , thank you very very much !!
A lot has changed during the last 3 years , new bungalows , a new Sala ....but the atmosphere is still pretty much the same . Our guests still talk together , go out together and have lots of good conversations .
We think already what we can improve when we come back to Chiang Mai end of this month .
Maybe some time in the future you can see the changes we made .
Until then all the best ,
Un abrazo

We stayed in the Mandalay house for 5 days after reading all the great reviews on TA. I am so glad we did. We loved the paradise like surrounds of gardens, sculptures, haciendas, Thai cottages, ponds and trees. But the best part of the stay were the gracious, helpful, warm and accommodating hosts. Even though SG is in a village outside Chiang Mai, within a day Peter made us experts at getting to and from the city. In fact, I loved the trip back 'home' each night eagerly awaiting the fabulous feast that is cooked right in front of you. Fresh ingredients, warm people, great company. The magic happens at night when lanterns provide a warm glow to the gardens. Sipping wine, eating heavenly Thai cuisine, listening to music and chatting with fellow travelers, perfection! Pai's cooking is divine. I even got to watch the entire evening dinner preparations once.

This is not a place if you want shiny bathrooms, marble floors and the latest amenities that can be found in innumerable city hotels. This IS the place if you want great memories, a relaxed and friendly place where the hosts will help you with anything.

Peter even drove us one day to the village when we wanted to get hair cuts! Who does that? They arranged great trips to the surrounding areas. We wanted to buy teak doors for which they helped find stores and a guide, even going so far as to check the shipping after we had left thailand.

I highly recommend it if you want to relax away from the city yet be able to get there easily. Riding the local transport was fun. I felt like a local within a couple of days :)

Thanks a lot to both of you for a wonderful review ! I hope your teak doors arrived safely at your home . It was a pleasure having you at our place and we are glad that you liked the Secret Garden .We have about 2 weeks left until we have to go back to Thailand and to work .During the last weeks we got really lazy , and it will be difficult to adjust ourselves again to 16 hour days ...but on the other hand I miss my work , just hanging around is not my cup of tea .
A big hug from the 3 of us
