We first saw this agriturismo spot in the Lonely Planet book. Then we checked out their website. The place looked amazing on line and it did not disappoint when we got there. The old farmhouse was rustic and charming. Our room was a dream. We booked the superior room which was like a small suite with a couch and a chair for relaxing and our own private terrace above our room which was its own separate small building. We relaxed on the terrace with a glass of wine in the evenings before dinner. The breakfast was plentiful and a lot of variety. We ate dinner at the hotel each night the chef is great and every meal was wonderful. It is prix fixe so you have to check the menu board in the morning to see what dinner will be served. The location is a little off the beaten path. Takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the main highway, but we found it very convenient to get to all areas of the island. While there we went to Cap Formentor, Alcudia, Sineu, Perta, Palma and the northern coast. Most place saw were under 40 minutes away. I would definitely not hesitate to stay there again.

Room Tip: Get the superior room with its own private terrace

We have just come back from 3 fantastic days at Finca Es Castell, helped by some unseasonably good weather. We booked based on the tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed - it was so good we literally didn't leave the grounds throughout the whole trip (pretty unusual for us).

The Finca is a wonderful old building with beautiful rooms and lovely communal areas with a great pool and a barn with an authentic olive press where lunch and tea is served. If you want a faceless international hotel this will not be for you - the rooms are individual, authentically Majorcan and have beautiful touches such as fresh flowers - and no TV (though there was free wifi).

The setting is truly stunning in the mountains and there is absolute peace and quiet (with only the sound of sheep bells). There are some villages and one town within 15 minutes' drive if you want to get out, and the beach is around 30 mins away. It's about 40 mins from Palma airport.

The food was also excellent - the breakfast is extensive, fresh and delicious. For lunch, there were huge and lovely salads, again freshly made. In the evening there was a 31 Euro 4 course set menu which was very good value and delicious, and served on the terrace.

It's worth pointing out that most things in the hotel are reasonable. You could get a nice bottle of wine over dinner for 13 Euros, while it was only a couple of Euros for a coke during the day (there is a fridge and freezer with ice creams and drinks, on an honesty system). There is free tea and coffee during the day and free cakes for afternoon tea - another lovely touch. There are also lots of bookshelves round the hotel where you can find a good book to borrow.

James who runs the hotel could not have been more helpful - it is brilliantly peaceful and the service is to match. We'll definitely be going back.

We have spent a whole week at Es Castell, and were spoilt from morning to evening including the night. The service is impeccable, the breakfast buffet is sumptuous, the optional meals (by good weather) cooked with great care and mostly served on the open terrace overlooking the whole island lying below you to the south with all the stars as panoply above us… were most delicious and plentiful. Our hotel room was large and furnished with utmost care for the detail, every wish and whim was instantly fulfilled. We packed our luggage and went home quite reluctantly, but we have already booked another week next year.

Room Tip: Everything is just perfect

Really enjoyed our stay at this delightful Finca. The setting is absolutely amazing nestling amongst farmland with the mountains as a backdrop. All you can hear is the tinkling of the bells around the sheeps necks in the distance. James is a charming and attentive host who made us feel most wellcome. We had a lovely comfortable room and enjoyed our substanial breakfast. Evening meals should not be missed comprising 4 courses featuring home grown produce and some excellent local wines on offer. Be warned finding Es Castell can be a bit challenging so a good map or Sat Nav essential. There are some wonderfull walks in the area so worth taking some stout shoes or boots (rough terraine).

James and his wife run an outstanding hotel. We stayed as a group at their satellite hotel just along the valley, Son Ametler, which was also excellent. The main hotel is set in something like 400 hectares nestling close to the mountains. Both buildings are is in top class condition and you will struggle to find better service anywhere. Food is good.
