“Very Nice!”
Reviewed May 5, 2012

I've been there cause of a long travel. Passing by, I decided to stop there. It's near Italy, in a very little town. The food was very good and the owners (new, coming from Portugal), are discrete.
The room was clean and quiet, in spite of the proximity to the highway of Simplon.
I recommend this elegant structure (inside also has a delightful local museum of gold) at all.

seems a bit 'to go back in time between these walls.

This place is just fantastic. After the historic tower was terribly hit by a mudslide ten years ago, they re-built the building with beautiful style. Excellent modern architecture meets historic walls - just amazing.

Beautiful rooms with beautiful design (okay, the TV could be a bit nicer and bigger but who cares). Super friendly staff. A nice breakfast in the stylish dining room.

Only criticism: The food at the restaurant was not superb. The Rösti were obviously way too long in the oven. But I am rating the hotel and not the restaurant here.

Room Tip: Had one room that was half old half new structure

This is one best renovation we have seen. After the horrible land slip which destroyed the complete half of the old Stockalperturm, the remaining half has been beautifully renovated and completed with a new semi-detached building (all concrete) and been reverted to a hotel. Wherever you step, you know exactly if you are in the old or new part, however, old and new match beautifully together. The rooms are of a simple elegance and we immediately felt very comfortable (very good price/quality). There is an excellent restaurant (also in this beautiful simple style) where they serve local food. Furthermore they have a wine cellar in the old part where you can take your apero/cocktail. Very friendly service. The hotel is definitely worth a trip!

Pros - This is a beautiful hotel with very nice rooms and a good restaurant.
Cons - It is literally beside the Simplon Pass highway just a stone's throw from the Italian border. Unfortunately, there is a lot of truck traffic on this highway. The trucks are quite noisy as they brake to stop at the border. Several times we could smell the diesel fuel from the trucks in our room on the 2nd floor. We had to sleep with the windows open because it was so hot and I was woken at 5 am. We had planned to stay 2 nights but had to leave after 1 night because I couldn't get back to sleep with the symphony of trucks outside the window. Breakfast was fine but had the smallest selection of any of the hotels we stayed at during our 3 week touring vacation. There is also nothing to walk to from the hotel. If you want to hike you have to drive to get to hiking routes.

Most people just drive through Gondo, thinking of their final destination, and forget to look left and right. It's a pity, because this place has a lot to offer. The Stockalperturm, for one thing, is a wonderful place to stay. The modern design, with the elegant alliance of wood and stones, plus clever lighting, is a true pleasure for the eyes and soul. We stayed three nights in a room on the fourth flour and had a great time. Dinner food was delicious, with a good selection of reasonably priced wines from the Valais (available "open", i.e. no need to buy entire bottles). Breakfast was ok, although we were disappointed not to get the delicious Walliser Roggenbrot (traditional rye bread from the Valais) we were hoping for.

From Gondo, you can hike to many wonderful and quite secret natural spots. We went to the Zwischbergen valley and hiked up towards the Tschawinersee: wonderful wild blueberries, strawberries and rasperries were waiting for us, plus a lot of great views. No other hikers in sight, just great!

  • Liked — Great architecture, zen atmosphere, clean and beautiful rooms.
  • Disliked — One of the dining rooms was noisy (loud echo).

We happened upon the Stockalperturm Hotel by chance, and it is now our new favorite hotel...beautiful accommodation, amazing location (Swiss side of the Swiss Italy border), and a staff that were incredibly kind and helpful. Some of the highlights were:
- The room: modern, subdued, calming and very clean. Beautiful in their simplicity.
- The restaurant: lovely swiss cuisine, fabulous minimilistic decor, and an interactive kitchen with great staff
- The hotel: Amazing renovation to and ancient building that was damaged in a mud slide. We loved the wine cellar and the lovely seating areas.
Overall, we gave this hotel a 10, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
