Stayed here for a night over the bank holiday and really loved the place. Set in beautiful surroundings in an area of natural beauty, the first sight of Hartington Hall was very impressive. We had booked 2 rooms, a single and a double and were very impressed with the standard
Our double was right on the top floor and had its own kitchen/ living room and bathroom. What a surprise! The cupboard was stocked with more kitchen utensils then at most self catering places I've been to - not that I used them as we ate in the restaurant.
The evening meal was beautiful! 3 or 4 choices of starters mains and sweets all for £11.95. Very well cooked too. The downside was that because of the place's popularity , it was very busy ( that and it being Bank Holiday) so there was quite a queue for food, both in the evening and the following morning for breakfast.
Breakfast was also lovely - although our serving wasn't as generous as the previous hostel we had been to. It was well cooked, however. Also there were no rolls left and only one double toaster, which we felt was totally inadequate for the number of people who use this hostel. The wait was abit off putting.
All that said, We absolutley loved our stay there!
The staff were lovely - very friendly, efficient and hard working. A refreshing change from some hotels I've been to.
Another thing I really liked were the communal areas, which had comfy sofas and chairs and were very inviting, to sit and chat with a drink or play games or to read in.
I would definitely return! If I could change anything though, it would be in the restaurant - a better system for the many people who eat there, to avoid the issues raised above.
The whole experience was very enjoyable.

The beautiful building was the perfect back drop to an extended family weekend break. The children were safe and happy in the well equiped play rooms but the most fun was playing on the adventure playground and the games of french cricket on the lawn which attracted other eager players. The accomodation and facilities were clean and comfortable, the meals were tasty and exceptionally good value, the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, I can't recommend this hostel highly enough. Looking forward to the next visit.

My friend and I had a great stay here for a few days during term time.

Our first room was cold, but as soon as we mentioned it to the friendly staff, they offered us a different room, which was warmer and bigger.

The kitchen was well equipped, and the other shared areas were warm and welcoming. The animals in the courtyard were sweet too, great for kids.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would certainly come back.

I returned to this hostel for a 3 night Easter break having previously enjoyed a visit 7 months earlier. It was nice to return to this superb historic building and to enjoy the local shops and hostelries. My room was a small ensuite single room on the first floor but as it overlooked the rear entrance it became somewhat noisy from early in the morning. Apart from some inconsiderate people the whole stay was very pleasant

Room Tip: The single rooms that overlook the courtyard can be subject to noise from outside

This place has excellent facilities. The outdoor and indoor play equipment keeps the children amused. The setting is beautiful, and the location is ideal for those who love outdoor pursuits. Only criticism is family room was too small. Four custom made bunks left no floor space. We were falling over each other getting dressed. The head clearance was so low on both of the custom books that it was impossible to read in bed, or do anything at all once the children were asleep.

Stunning location and building - hard to believe when you drive up to this place that its a YHA! We are a family of 4 (with 2 young children) and found our whole experience at Hartiington to be excellent - nice sizeable room (disabled room on ground floor), friendly and chatty staff (receptionist was not as outwardly friendly as you usually experience at YHA but all the same efficient and helpful), good quality and affordable food (curry night was good).
We completed the '3 Dales walk' (taking in Beresford, Wolfscote & Biggin Dale), which starts literally right outside Hartington Hall driveway, and would highly recommend this walk for wonderful and varied scenery (although rather wet and muddy when we visited!)

I cannot fault this place in any way, my friend and I wanted to go to Alton towers and decided to stay overnight as it would otherwise be a long drive. We looked at the generic Holiday inns and Travelodges etc but found they were expensive (approx £60 a night). I have stayed at YHAs all over the country so decided to look up the nearest ones. This place was amazing 15mins down the road from Alton towers and £25 a night for a private room. The staff were great really friendly and helpful the food was amazing, and the room was clean, like I said I cannot find fault with the place. Highly recommended
