YHA Hartington Hall
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 16, 2014 via mobile

This place has excellent facilities. The outdoor and indoor play equipment keeps the children amused. The setting is beautiful, and the location is ideal for those who love outdoor pursuits. Only criticism is family room was too small. Four custom made bunks left no floor space. We were falling over each other getting dressed. The head clearance was so low on both of the custom books that it was impossible to read in bed, or do anything at all once the children were asleep.

Stunning location and building - hard to believe when you drive up to this place that its a YHA! We are a family of 4 (with 2 young children) and found our whole experience at Hartiington to be excellent - nice sizeable room (disabled room on ground floor), friendly and chatty staff (receptionist was not as outwardly friendly as you usually experience at YHA but all the same efficient and helpful), good quality and affordable food (curry night was good).
We completed the '3 Dales walk' (taking in Beresford, Wolfscote & Biggin Dale), which starts literally right outside Hartington Hall driveway, and would highly recommend this walk for wonderful and varied scenery (although rather wet and muddy when we visited!)

I cannot fault this place in any way, my friend and I wanted to go to Alton towers and decided to stay overnight as it would otherwise be a long drive. We looked at the generic Holiday inns and Travelodges etc but found they were expensive (approx £60 a night). I have stayed at YHAs all over the country so decided to look up the nearest ones. This place was amazing 15mins down the road from Alton towers and £25 a night for a private room. The staff were great really friendly and helpful the food was amazing, and the room was clean, like I said I cannot find fault with the place. Highly recommended

We've just come home from 3 nights at Hartington Hall YHA and we loved it. The hall itself is a stunning building, looking particularly beautiful in the evening sunlight. Hartington village is a downhill walk, about 5 minutes, from the YHA and has a village stores, a cheese shop, a pub, a hotel, an antiques shop, a gift shop and a tea shop. We ate at The Devonshire Arms on our first evening, very friendly, good food. On the second evening we used the self catering kitchen, which is in the courtyard. It has 2 sinks, 3 hobs, an oven, a microwave, a kettle and a toaster, which only has two working slots. It is however, well equipped with pans, plates, cutlery, chopping boards, cups etc. There are two large fridges and boxes provided to store dry goods. It can seat 20, split between 6 tables, but is a bit tight at busy periods. On our last night we ate in the hostel restaurant, which offers a range of food, good portions and at extremely reasonable prices, including a free drink if you buy 2 or more courses. There is also a bar and cafe and you can also eat breakfast there. There are lots of picnic tables in the grounds and lots of indoor seating - comfy sofas - in the entrance hall and a lounge, which is reminiscent of a National Trust property. There is a car park, but it's quite small and some people are rather selfish with how much space they take up; you can also park on the road. We stayed in two private rooms, both of which had ensuite showers, the second a toilet too. The staff on reception were really helpful and sorted out an issue for us. We'd definitely recommend Hartington Hall YHA and stay there again.

This place has it all. The Hall has antiquity and a superb rural setting. It has excellent staff who are cheerful and so helpfully friendly. The chef is brilliant as evidenced by his creations - don't miss the curry nights!

We stayed (26th March 2014 3 nights) in The Roost and will again as often as possible. It's an ideal base for exploration of Derbyshire and Staffs, or just walking the hills and lanes.

The bar stocks some excellent real ales at a price too good to miss. We sat in the tranquil gardens with a beer each and just soaked up the whole history and serenity of the Hall - not to mention the views.

This really is a hotel par excellence and at prices it's rude not to. We joined YHA this time (had done Ilam Hall last September) and we saved £18 off the £25 per annum subscription, by member discount!

Only downside - check before you book that there are no large parties of children stopping. They were VERY noisy and detracted from the tranquillity. Otherwise perfect.

Room Tip: The Roost gives self contained flat-like accommodation on three levels. Ground floor with well equip...

We had an impromptu visit to Derbyshire and decided to stay at Hartington Hall Youth Hostel, and we were definitely not disappointed. The first thing that struck us was the friendliness and helpfulness of the very hard working staff. Our room was clean, quiet and cosy (not in a cramped way). The youth hostel is surrounded by beautiful walks and there is a lovely local pub down in the village, only 5 minutes walk from the youth hostel. The pub was good but the alcohol available in the youth hostel was a much better price, there was a pint for under £2! The only downsize of this hostel is that for a couple you could get a better deal in a similar location.

Room Tip: For couples there is a very interesting room, I think it was Bonnie Prince Charlies room.

We are new to Youth Hostels and thought we would try a night in a local one for starters. We were very impressed. The staff were so friendly and welcoming we would return just to see them. The setting is stunning and very grand. The food was excellent quality, plentiful portions and at an unbelievable price. In the daytime there was plenty of outdoor seating and in the evening there was a real fire to snuggle up to. Oh and piggies, goats, bunnies and ducks in the farmyard ssoooh cute. Our room was toastie warm with a lovely hot shower, comfy beds and spotlessly clean. We couldn't fault our stay and can't wait to return.
