“One Night”

The room we reserved was described as "superior"-however, it was no more than "standard" as the facilities were no more than adequate. Also, the shower could only be described as pathetic, being no more than a dribble. On departure, on mentioning this a £5 deduction was made from the bill with the comment that the shower had been "seen to" only the week before??
We did not eat in the restaurant as the pricing seemed to be over-priced for the options available.
On the basis of our stay, we will not be staying again as there are better value for money options in the area.

Very comfortable stay. The majority of the staff were very friendly. Food was amazing. Stayed for 3 nights with a groupon offer which was very good value for money. Harrington is central to explore Derbyshire. The weather was very kind to us so it was a very welcome break.

We stayed at the Charles Cotton Hotel for two nights on a Groupon voucher at the beginning of July. In our opinion, it proved to be very good value for money and much better than we expected.

We chose Hartington village with the sole intention to walk the Tissington trail during our stay. We did this on the Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Complimentary tea and cake was served on our arrival which was lovely and very welcome.

As we had our dog with us we were put in the annexe across the back yard from the hotel. This was perfect for our needs and was of a good size. The room was clean and had no evidence of previously having had dogs in it.

The evening meal served on both evenings in the hotel bistro by candlelight was excellent. There was a varied menu and the portions were of a good size for us. We didn't sample the bar menu, but did see some of it served and it looked lovely. The full English breakfast was absolutely first rate on both mornings. The quality of the locally sourced products was evident. We didn't need any lunch on either day!

Every member of staff we encountered were very friendly, efficient and professional. The owners were around all the time we were staying and pitched in to help behind the bar when things got busy, which I thought was nice.

Hartington village is lovely and well placed for local places of interest. We would not hesitate to stay at the Charles Cotton Hotel if we are in the area again.

A good friendly hotel with a great bar and food to match. The manager was always around with a friendly hello, the lady on reception was helpful with info and the girls in the bar were fantastic! The room was spotless and the bed a delight!! Looking forward to our next visit soon. Thank you.

We arrived on a lovely Sunday afternoon, to be greeted by friendly staff, who showed us straight to our room. We were then served a lovely complimentary cream tea. After making our dinner reservation we went for a walk to another local village, after mooching around the picturesque Hartington for an hour.
After our walk we had a lovely local pint in the bar before being seated to dinner, in what was a lovely high ceilinged room within the hotel. The food was excellent, and the service was great.
The rooms were extremely comfortable, and we rounded off a memorable stay with a superb cooked breakfast.
Can thoroughly recommend the sunday stopover - all of the above for £100, for 2 people. The only extras were the drinks; including a lovely bottle of wine.
Plenty of other people were also enjoying exactly the same hospitality - thank you Alan and Judy.

No chance encounter, we espied the lovely Hartington and the equally charming Charles Cotton when passing on a previous jolly, mental notes were made and when the time came to revisit some of the walking from our youth we booked in online.
And therein it seems was our first mistake, a lesson not made clear to us until we checked out two days later.
The young man who signed us in was first rate, he even gave the bar staff a hurry up when they abandoned the bar and left customers gagging.
In our view the web provides businesses with a pay-as-you-go marketing device and so we were surprised to discover that the customer is held responsible for the financial aspects of this relationship.
Our room was tiny, but had the web offering been a little more encouraging we would happily have booked one of the superior rooms, the breakfast service was downgraded for us cheapskates, but had we been able we would have paid for the better service.
Day one we were given a breakfast menu with no prices, other than for extras. We were surprised because we thought the web offering was "room only", but we assumed that they know their business and happily tucked in to an acceptable Full English.
So surprise then on day two when we sat down to break our fast and having given our room number were told that a mistake had been made and we would have to pay for breakfast, and for yesterday as well.
All fine and dandy, except that their mistake now became our mistake and the customer was wrong again. Our shoulders began to sag under the weight of the knowledge that we were not adequate.
Then, after a full day of walking, having sat down to dinner with the Sunday Menu and decided what we were to have we had that menu whipped away and a replacement given that seemed to have the same items available, but at higher prices.
It may well be that the menu removed was a lunchtime menu and that the content of the meals was inferior to evening service, but if that was the case our embarrassed waitress failed to explain this to us.
We could continue in this vein but our lasting impression is that customers are just a bit of a nuisance really.
But we are not sure how you get over the lack of an available hairdryer ( in 2013???).
I know, I know, we forgot to bring our own, tsk, tsk.
Or that no breakfast menu was supplied when we were popped into the pay as you go bracket.
It turns out that you can have any breakfast you like for the ten pound fee, not knowing this we opted for scrambled eggs ( we guessed that they would do these), and they were awful.
A spoonful or two of shrapnel eggs that had been quietly hardening in the bain marie since sun up, surrounded on all sides by thin slices of toasted cheap bread. Someone had slapped a smear of grease into the middle of each slice.
We think that the place lacks a good hand on the tiller, the staff training is clearly poor, and the plethora/lack of menus needs resolving.
We might stay again, and certainly the meal on Sunday was excellent, but armed with the knowledge that the management begrudge the commission paid to internet intermediaries we would use the phone to book, and we would drag the information out of them that would enable us to have a relaxing stay.
And for goodness sake get some decent beer in, the world is awash with tasty boutique beers.

Room Tip: Take a Superior room, the pictures on the web only show four poster beds, which we think is a bit na...
