Our trips to Hartington have become an annual short break treat, completed by time in the Devonshire after a good walk or cycle. Wonderful landlord, food and open fire welcome.

My husband and I, with 4 friends, were in the area for New Year and ate at the Devonshire Arms on the 30th. We had booked a table in the bar so we were a bit disappointed to be put in the dining room area which didn't have the cosy fire. Never mind- it was beautifully decorated and, after other parties came into the room, it became more atmospheric.
The general consensus was that all starters were delectable! The goat's cheese was stunning and a number of us thoroughly enjoyed that. Mains varied; those who had the burgers found them a little heavy but I was lucky enough to have opted for the steak pie which came with lovely home-cut chips and plenty of veg. A great night with friends and decent value too.
P.S the owner was lovely and, after our meal, invited us to sit by the fire in the main bar.

the positive: a very warm welcome from a landlord who knows his pub and his people; he goes out of his way to make guests feel welcome and wanted, a thorougly nice chap who will look after you and make for a pleaseant expereince. a good choice of real ales which were well kept

the not so positive; the internal and external decor needs updating badly, as it lets the whole feel of the pub down. it looks tired and dirty from the outside, in a charming village square, and inside the tables(in the bar area) need replacing

the ok: the food was ok, without being staggering. the sirloin steak, whilst huge, wasnt that meaty and the "leek and stilton" sauce on the chicken was very leeky but not very stiltony!

do go for a very warm welcome and tio make this place realise its potential, in a fabulous village, a better chef and some tLC tp the pub would complete a most wonderful pub in a fabulous location

Love this pub, it's landlord, food and staff. I am not easy to please as a rule but have nothing to recommend changing or improving.
Ate in the restaurant and drank in the lounge and bar over a weekend, and had to be dragged out!
Until next time.........

Great food and atmosphere in a beautiful village - warm and homely and dogs are allowed in the bar which was great - made to feel welcome and good lunch time food.
