“The Best in Manipal but Ridiculously Overpriced”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

Its probably the best hotel in Manipal. But that does not mean they can charge exorbitant prices. The price in fact is comparable to the Westin in Pune.

The rooms are decent, like any other 4-star hotel should have. The Cosmo Cafe has good food. The staff was helpful.

Beware: The billing might not be right. Please make sure you check every item on the bill. I was running late and hence did not have time to cross check the bill, but they had charged extras which I hadnt signed for.

The Fortune Inn is a great hotel, but for no more than a few nights. This is a clean, spacious and a helpful hotel. Check-inn was really easy and we were given the password for the Wi-Fi straight away. I entered the room to see it was clean. It was a nice room, but its not a room you would want to stay in all day. The restaurant food was good and the service was okay. The facilities were great and the internet was speedy. It is extremely cheap and child friendly. It is also in a very good location because you can get a rickshaw into where KFC, pizza hut and dominos will be and also a nike store and an adidas store, for just 20 rupees. This was kind of like a check-in, check-out hotel for us, but it is definitely the best hotel in Udupi.

Room Tip: Any room is a good room

Fortune Inn Valley View is not a bad hotel at all, its decently appointed, rooms are pretty big and spacious with very comfortable beds, the staff is really helpful but it knows that it's the only decent hotel in the city so it abstracts a premium for its services.Almost all of it's clientele consists of parents and guardians of students studying in Manipal university and it gets totally booked during the admission season ( June- August). The hotel is clean and modern, the rooms are very well appointed and comfortable, the restaurant has a very good selection of food ( we ate breakfast and dinner) but the food gets extremely repetitive. We didnt get a chance to use the swimming pool but the pool is very nice and provides a relaxing atmosphere. The hotel is NOT a 5 star so expect the same.Overall a very enjoyable stay.

The hotel tries to be a 5 star luxury hotel, but it's really just a decent hotel, without much charm. I ended up staying there for almost a week, but didn't really have much choice, given that this seems to be the only good hotel in Manipal. There are a number of things that I was unhappy about. For one, I didn't manage to get a room with a single large bed, and was obliged to stay in a double room, with two small beds separated by a piece of furniture fixed to the wall. The only queensize bed room they were willing to give me, and in which I did spend one night - a sleepless night! - was totally dysfunctional - the A/C wasn't working properly, windows couldn't be open, and it was located just by the main A/C engine (or so I gather) and was extremely noisy. I should add tht even the other rooms are noisy in the same respect, as the hotel has a central A/C system making a lot of noise. Furthermore, I take it that the management of the hotel is aware that, being the only OK hotel in Manipal, clients don't really have much choice, and they are not really eager to make their clients happy. Another major incident to report was at check-out, when they charged me a rate greater than what they had agreed upon with the University. I was stuck there for about 45 minutes, with a car waiting for me; it was just totally unprofessional and I dare say the staff was not only inefficient but even rude. My overall impression is that of a hotel that presents itself as a luxurious one, but where the basic things aren't working properly. For instance, there is a doorman, dressed in some silly uniform, to hold the doors for you as you come in; but then the same doorman goes around in the garden spitting, and making loud spitting noises, as you may be trying to enjoy your food at the terrasse of the hotel restaurant. Frankly, I would have preferred no doorman at all, but at least a place where you can relax and sleep quietly at night. On the positive side, the swimming pool area is actually quite pleasant, the café has some outside seating that is also fairly pleasant (it's probably the only place in manipal where you can have a drink in a relaxed outside setting), and the café and restaurants are good, both servicewise and foodwise.

Fortune Inn valley view is a good hotel with close to 70 rooms. Hotel lounge, Cafeteria is very spacious. The staff members are extremely supportive. The rooms are very spacious but make sure you get kingsize beds in the rooms. The bathroom has good modern bathroom fittings. They offer complimentary breakfast and they offer lots of variety . The roomservice and housekeeping are very prompt. Fortune hotel is right next to Engineering, Medical and Dental college. Hotel has a very good swimming pool. The only hard part for the customers is that it is slightly expensive.

This is the only 'real' hotel in Manipal to choose from and I have stayed here many many times. The hotel has potential and the service amongst hotel staff (other than the front desk) is very friendly and professional. Breakfast is often included and there is another restaurant on premises to choose from as well as room service. My only real complaint is that this hotel is way over-priced because there is no competition in Manipal. Add one additional, respectable hotel in Manipal and the rates here would drop no doubt. The rooms are decent (the upper floors are much better - primarily better quality mattresses - but they cost more), I just feel they've grown quite comfortable with the fact that they're the only ones in town and could use a pick-me-up in terms of customer service (primarily front desk) and overall upkeep.
