My husband and I stayed here before and after the Gibbon Experience. The rooms were clean and the view of the Mekong was fantastic. They have the nicest restaurant view of the river in town and it is perfect for sunset. The shower was great, especially after getting muddy in the jungle. The pricetag is a little steeper than many other places in town but we thought it was worth it!

Room Tip: Riverside view room was excellent!

Stayed here with two teenage kids on the way to and from the Gibbon Experience. The hotel was fine, and probably the best option in Houay Xai. Rooms were light, most with views of the river. En suite bathrooms with plenty of hot water (much appreciated when returning from the Gibbon. Service was fairly average but this seemed to be a common theme in the Houay Xai guest houses. Breakfast wasn't great, although a nice location down by the river. The better bet for food was the slight odd-looking treasure chest restaurant next door - also by the river. Great food, friendly staff and they let us take in our own bottle of wine as they had none in the restaurant. As we were travelling with kids we had wanted to book the Riverside in advance but found it tricky to do so. Eventually managed to book online through LaoTripAdvisor - maybe more expensive than walking in off the street but it worked.

I found the room to be average, no better than a homestay, maybe a little less smellier, but not worth the price. Save your $10 extra and just grab one of the many rooms available on the main street. The town is small and requires no additional effort to walk 5 minutes and find a place.

They also did not have my booking when I arrived (turns out you don't need one in this tiny town so wait until you get there and see a place you like) and then tried to charge me a night because i choose not to stay there more than one night...how that is possible without having my original booking I'm unsure, but needless to say the service didn't make it either!

The hotel overlooks the river, rooms are quite spacious and relatively clean, the bathroom quite spartan but the shower and hot water worked well. The wifi also functioned well. Staff pretty helpful, really no complaints at al.

The Riverside Hotel is a small hotel with about 12 rooms. It is directly on the Mekong River next to the major car/truck ferry crossing to Chiang Khong, Thailand. The hotel itself is on a lane on the right, off the road leading down to the ferry.

The view from the hotel and small restaurant attached is indeed magnificent (if you are into rivers).

The hotel is relatively new. Construction materials litter the yard.

The rooms are clean. Plumbing has never been a forte of the Lao and a good plumber is badly needed. In my room, the sink drained on to the floor. Luckily, Southeast Asian toilets allow for water flowing around the bathroom floor and there is a drain in the floor that drains the water away. But, the water from the sink goes on to the floor. Warning: wear the slippers that are provided. If you are not careful, the shower gets the whole bathroom wet. If you are a Southeast Asian veteran, all this is normal.

The restaurant has breakfast. The bananas are excellent. I and my Lao counterparts traveling together also ordered dinner there which was good. No problems with the food.

The owner is a tour operator and the restaurant and hotel are a family run business. They are trying hard to make it all work. Be patient, flexible, and optimistic, and all will be well.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a river view. Room 204, a corner room, has the best view and a small balcony, as well as a view of the forest in back of the hotel. All rooms are quiet.
