Il Castello di Gargonza
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 31, 2010

Castello Gargonza is being loving restored and run by members of the family that has owned it since maybe the 1400's. They want guests to get the feeling Dante did when he stayed there. Well, the feeling he would have had if modern plumbing and wifi had been available in 1303.

I will admit that it took me a day or two to adjust to the atmosphere inside thick stone walls with small shuttered windows. At first I was upset that my room in the granary was not light enough or warm enough, but once I crawled under the comforter I slept like the well-fed guest I was. The next morning I explored cobbled paths and ancient buildings imagining what roll I would have played in castello life. Later we knit in a garden reminiscent of Under the Tuscan Sun. I also learned that I could have upgraded to a room with a fireplace, but by then I had fallen in love with Castello di Gargonza, just as it is.

Planned our wedding in Tuscany, gorgous site and location. We loved the hosptallity and very familly oriented. We where a group of 35 and the only thing I heard is "what a wonderfull place and I will always remember this wedding". Kids can run all around the site and all the walls keep them secured. Very spacefull for people who want quiet areas. You are about an 1 hour from everything (Sienna, Florence, Pompei, etc.). If I could give them 6 stars they would have it. Food is excellent at a good price $$. They did everything in there power to make our stay memorable. They delivered!!! We will go back.... Thanks Gargonza for all those memories

Stayed here 3 nights, the hotel was fully booked for the following week-end for a wedding. Setting is magical, small resort at the end of a narrow winding road at the top of a mountain, like living in a castle. On the day we arrived, hotel was pretty empty. Since our room in the main building did not have a view, we requested a room on the third floor, which we got immediately. Great view above the roofs of the other buildings, surrounded by forest, absolutely wonderfull. Outside our small bedroom window, a pigeon was nesting! Do not expect 5 stars room here, it is an old castle, but very comfortable, large rooms with fully equiped kitchen. You will find bugs in the room in the morning, normal for an old place in the middle of a forest, with no screens in the window!Only negative, no balcony... Breakfast was great, and having a drink after a day of visiting on the terrace over-looking at the forest is a must. Remember it is isolated, you will need your car to move around and try restaurents in San Savino. We were referred to this hotel by friends who stayed here on a couple of occasions and praised the restaurent. We may have been unlucky, but the food was just OK. This forced us to try other places in San Savino, which was a good thing. Coming back late at night on the winding road may be not for everyone. We did not mind coming back to sleep in this quiet oasis, far from cities.

We stayed at Castle Gargonza (a little hard to find, but GPS helped) on the recommendation of a friend and couldn't have been more pleased. It is a little ride up the hill from the nearest town (our GPS kept sending us up the 2.7 mile unpaved road - we recommend the slightly longer paved road), but there is nothing to compare to the setting and the property. The castle and other buildings have been lovingly rennovated by the family that runs the place (Neri at the front desk was charming and always helpful) and it is a joy to walk around the grounds and get a sense of what life was like centuries ago. They have done an amazing job of balancing the old world charm and modern conveniences (including the energy saving lights in the winding hall to our room!). Free wi-fi is available in certain locations but not in the rooms, perhaps because of the ancient thick stone walls, so we really can't complain. The restaurant was fantastic (we went out one night but weren't excited about navigating the winding roads in the dark after dinner with wine) and on our last night they even made a special dish which we mentioned we had enjoyed while in Florence (tortello with pear and cheese - make a special request of the chef!). The only limitation is that second courses are all meat (and mostly beef - perhaps one pork and one lamb - no poultry or seafood) - typical Tuscan fare and very delicious. It would be a wonderful place for a wedding or honeymoom as they have meeting rooms and other facilities which we didn't use but passed by. We enjoyed our visit very much and hated to leave!

Everything written about the Castello di Gargonza is no exaggeration. Medieval style simplicity with all the comforts, as long as one is satisfied with "basic" luxury. The location is its strongest point as it is found amidst a forest with deer crossing the streets- attention drivers!- but everything else about is also excellent. One has the rare feeling for an accomodation of living in a self-sustained village, very tranquil and serene. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and the restaurant quality superb.
The personnel in the reception and the restaurant are very helpful and polite. The swimming pool is big enough and in beautiful surroundings.
Also the closest village, Monte San Savino is very charming.

Positive
We stayed in Santi ( name of the room). Nice room with small stove, fridge, sink and living area. Beautiful medieval place with modern accommodations. The restaurant offered great food, everything we ate was to die for. Close to Siena, Arezzo and Sn Gimignano.

Negative
The shower was so uncomfortable my husband had to skip it. You could not stand up straight with out hitting the ceiling. No A/C. The Bell tower went off at 2 AM for two minutes. We had the window open and were right next to it on the 3rd floor. The mattresses were so old and hard. We complained the next morning and the lady at the reception was so rude and offered no apologies.

This is a place for walking.
