“Not a whole lot to see”
Review of Mamukala Billabong

If you are a bird watcher then at times of the year it can be stunning, but otherwise there is not a whole lot to see. At certain times of the year its closed due to the wet season, but nearer the dry season when the water levels drop there can be lots of birds. The walk along the billabong is disappointing as they keep you to far away from the water to see much.

Located 12km past Aurora South Alligator or 30km before Jabiru with the signed turnoff on the right hand side off of the Arnhem Highway. A short drive will take you to the car park that has limited spaces available though.
There are two walks available, both very easy.

The first walk takes you to the bird hide, which provides great views over the wetlands and the wildlife, with information on the walls about species in the area.
The second walk is about 3km near the wetlands.

If you want some spectacular photos, dusk and dawn are the obvious times to be here.
During the late dry season September to even late November at times, you may be lucky to see the congregation of 1000's of Magpie geese and whistling ducks which is a stunning site.

We took a drive to the Billabong and it was a beautiful place. A vast expanse of water teeming with wildlife. Access to the water is from 2 sides and both are worth it.

We saw a wallaby just from the walk to the viewing platform. There were tons of all different types of birds at the viewing platform. Didn't see any crocs. We were there before the wet season, so all the birds were still hanging out in the same condensed spot. The loop walk was brutally hot and in the full sun. It was only worth doing to see and hear the multitude of birds (I'm guessing there were hundreds of thousands of them, mainly magpie geese) and for the exercise. Otherwise you could see/hear the same birds from the viewing platform.

The Mamukala Billabong is a spectacular place to visit early in the morning. We went there on our way back to Darwin from Jabiru. I got some nice panoramic shots of the birdlife and even got so see some of the legendary Barrimundi feeding!
