this was a great place and well situated for the Abel Tasman park. I stayed in a downstairs unit, they seemed to have a mixture of sizes and levels - very spacious and well designed, even had an ironing board that folded down from a cupboard. Laundry was just round the corner in a cupboard under the stairs.

There's not much to the town, but go further down the coast and you'll find some fantastic scenery!

We stayed in an "affordable luxury" room at the Avalon over christmas 2006. We booked one of these rooms because we knew we had a week of sleeping in hostels and boats leading up to christmas and wanted someplace nice for christmas day and we were very satisfied with our decision. We arrived on xmas eve and were greeted very pleasantly. The couple that owns/runs the property was incredibly friendly and helpful. The room was great with an excellent bed, kitchen facilities, flatscreen TV, DVD player, etc. Nice big bathroom too. Motueka is a small place so no restaurants were open on Christmas day, but the hotel has a really nice bbq area and we made our own feast and ate on our balcony. There is a decent selection of DVDs on hand in reception available for guest use. All-in-all this was a really nice place for a few days of quality facilities and close to Abel Tasman and everything else this part of the south island has to offer.

If you're on your way to Abel Tasman, this motel in nearby Motueka is a great place to stay. This is not a luxury acommodation, but the rooms are new, clean, comfortable, and bright. We had a family suite with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a full kitchen. Motukea has several restaurants, a grocery store, and other facilities, and is a short drive from Kaiteriteri and Abel Tasman Park.

By luck we found this wonderful motel in the tidy, quiet town of Motueka (30 minutes from Nelson) at the top of the South Island and gateway to Golden Bay. This was one of the best places we stayed in during our South Island tour.

Efficiently managed by the owners this motel is open for viewing so have a look before you make a decision. We inspected one of their new ultra luxury units and decided to stay for two nights. It was fabulous especially so when you have found it in a small town not a big metropolis.

The four new ultra luxury units are ground and first floor. We chose a first floor unit. This beautifully decorated, very spacious studio was extremely comfortable. With windows on three sides, beautiful views to the rear over orchard to snow trimmed hills. We enjoyed watching a movie (DVD borrowed from the free Reception library) on the 42" plasma wall mounted TV from the leather settee. Relaxed in the corner spa bath (takes 2) of the spacious, floor heated bathroom. Cooked an easy meal in the very well equipped kitchen (big supermarket minutes walk along the road). Slept peacefully in the huge bed - double glazing on the street front windows took care of any road noise. Awoke warm and refreshed - air conditioned studio. Showered and dried on warm towels off the heated towel rail. We could have moved in quite happily.

The other units we peeped into were also very nice and the furnishing in excellent condition. There are washers and dryers for visitors to use. In the attractive garden area there was a covered sunken seating area and a gas BBQ.

We sincerely recommend this motel to you.

Incredible place to stay while exploring Abel Tasman. The room was almost new with a king size bed, spa bathtub, plasma TV, DVD (free rentals), and kitchenette. Great value (NZ$150).
