“Magical location on Hokianga Harbour!”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

We were looking for comfortable accommodation on the west coast of North Island, and found this hotel on Tripadvisor, which was a real discovery. It's located in what must be one of the most picturesque spots in New Zealand, with great views.

We had a two-bedroomed unit, which was spacious and well-appointed. On arrival we took lunch in the bar and later dined in the elegant restaurant - you can eat al fresco on the terrace if you wish - finding the bill of fare and wine list offering a good choice. There is an adequate buffet breakfast.

One of the main attractions is that the hotel is fairly remote, and therefore well worth a visit if you've time to spare.

Room Tip: The single-storey (family) units adjoining the main block are very good value

Thank you for staying with us and I am pleased that you enjoyed one of our two bedroomed units. They are ideal for families or small groups of friends and situated right on the waters edge with that incredible view is certainly an attraction.
We would love to see you back in the Hokianga.

Didn't actually stay here as in a bach nearby but had a few drinks and swam in the pool which was very nice, well kept and a pleasant change from the ocean.
Were put off from eating due to the price, but menu looking very nice if a bit on the pricy side.

Thanks for spending time at our hotel. The view from our deck is stunning and is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a lovely cold drink. I am sorry you didn't sample our menu, but will definitely take your comments re: prices, on board. Perhaps we could look at also offering a snack type menu slightly cheaper as another option.

This accommodation did not disappoint in any way. We drove to Omapere from the south so saw the amazing view of Hokianga Harbour. Our next stunning view was over the water from our beautiful room. Large room with a comfortable bed, plunger coffee and a huge bathroom. I enjoyed a cooling dip in the pool soon after arrival. The meals were tasty and all staff friendly, attentive and helpful. Breakfast was included in the price. Highly recommend a stay here. It is at the more expensive end for accommodation but views, quality of service and room justify "spoiling yourself" and booking a stay here. Only disappointing feature was cost of wi fi, perhaps management can look at providing this free for guests.

Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to supply feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your time with us and your recommendation is very much appreciated Linda.
Unfortunately been in such a beautiful and remote area, does have its challenges, one of those being complimentary wi fi access.

Stayed 2 nights - 1 night at resort & 1 night at hotel. Booked a room not realising we had no beachfront view so they juggled things around to accommodate our needs - thanks lots. Enjoyed both rooms, 2 brm resort was more my favourite for what we needed on this visit but the beachfront room on hotel side is probably more modern & romantic. We had the best views looking out to the beach & sand dunes. Both rooms were lovely & clean, grounds beautiful, restaurant, bar, pool - what more do you need. Lovely, helpful staff all round - all very helpful. Second time there, will stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms with beachfront view - amazing views.

Excellent location with views towards the sand dunes on the Northern side of the Hokianga harbour. The room had good views over the heads, and also excellent views from the bar, restaurant and pool area.

Myself and my partner decided to stay for a night. We rode a couple of Harley,s up through Dargaville, thought the forest and popped at the Hokianga. The hotel is the most wonderful spot I have spent time. Although the hotel is a little on the older side and some ares,s a little tied the staff, food, and location sure made up for that. I can not praise the staff enough for their genuine kindness and politeness, I must say some major chain hotels should gets the secrets to their training. Our evening meals were fabulous, overlooking the water, the local wines were very good and staff were very attentive towards any needs.I can't say enough about this hidden treasure. We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms with a view to die for in the evening and too wake up in the morning was so great we stayed another night. If you want to get away from craziness of the city and share some romance this is the place.

We are not far from Auckland remeber so if yo uever feel like running away from the hustle and bustle just give us a call. We have a shed where we can lock your bikes away as well if you wanted to stay for a few days.

The Copthorne chain scored quite an amazing location with this hotel! Near the entrance to the awe-inspiring Hokianga Harbour and the Omapere fishing pier, the main building is the historic whalers' station, and they've added a range of accommodation types on the large grounds.

We felt like we got the best room in the place: upstairs with a balcony looking out to the harbour, with the pier right there to our right and the impressive giant Pohutakawa tree to our left. Also, we were at the very end of the building so noone bothered us walking past our room late at night! Absolutely relaxing for our final activity in New Zealand after a month of travelling.

The room had some good features, like the wooden divider between the main bedroom and the balcony area, meaning you could (a) get changed in privacy while others still sat on the balcony, and (b) shut out all the light for a sleep in. It also functioned fairly well for sound proofing. The bed was large and comfy and the bathroom was also large and had a bath and shower. Basic hotel amenities like iron/ironing board, hairdryer, complimentary teas/coffee, self-service laundry facilities were available: all adequate if not great quality- this place is more of a solid three star than fancy. Full marks though for being the only place we stayed in New Zealand that offered complimentary hot chocolate sachets as standard! And nice herbal teas too. And you only have to look out the front to the view again to be reminded you are in heaven. Heaven with direct access to the beach / pier!

The food (including breakfasts and dinners) was fairly mediocre: we had one really nice meal there and the rest was haphazard. Although, again the location more than makes up for it; the views you see while eating (inside or outside)! It's worth looking into other cafes nearby; although there are limited numbers we heard some were good, for instance in Rawene along the road.

The grounds are really lovely- a great place for families for sure, including a small swimming pool (the beach isn't great for swimming, having lots of stones underfoot- but that didn't stop people we saw swimming, plus confident swimmers can avoid the stones by jumping off the pier).

The bar is used by locals, taking the touristy edge off the atmosphere, which is great, and includes a pool table which we enjoyed making use of. The staff are all locals as well, and the service was certainly adequate if not warm. Laid-back I guess would be the complimentary way of describing it. But again, who cares: just look out to the harbour and be blown away again!

If I had one actual complaint it would be the constant playing of hideous 80s music throughout the hotel and grounds, which you couldn't escape even sitting out in the grass or by the pool. Truly a terrible selection of music which surely pleases noone, and became really grating by the second and third day. Almost tempted to write in to Copthorne HQ about it- way to nearly spoil a uniquely stunning spot.

Still this is the place to stay for reasonable prices on the Hokianga Harbour! Despite some of my lukewarm comments above I would recommend it to anyone staying in the area.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a direct beach view, whatever your room type. If you prefer ground floor to walk s...

Firstly thank you very much for your detailed review on our hotel. I really appreciate feedback be it positive or negative and you have brought up some interesting points in here. Thank you.

To start with the music I do apologise. It is a tough balance picking something that everyone is fond of and sometimes hard to get the balance. We try to mix it up and genereally have a set "Breezy Easy Listening" playlist playing. Next time if you have any requests please do let us know.

I am pleased to hear you enjoyed all the facilities of the hotel and the surroundings. We really are lucky with the beach right in front with the wharf and the sand dunes.

We look forward to your next visit whenever it may be.

Regards

Kyle
