Cannon fortress is a historical relic where remains evidences to show the brave history of Vietnamese in protecting the country from foreign invasions. Yet It is the highest viewpoint that tourists can observe magnificient views of beautiful Cat Ba Archipelagos from all directions.

Great walk - make sure you carry some water though. Interesting place and amazing views over Cat Ba and nearby islands

The exhibits are not the main draw for me; I was more interested in the view from the top than the exhibits.

The staff cleverly placed the ticket booth a long way before the main exhibit area and made sure that the only few spots that offer a bird's eye view of the bay are situated AFTER the ticket booth so that visitors who merely want to enjoy the natural scenery are still required to pay for the 60,000 Dong entrance fee of the fort.

You won't be able to catch any glimpse of the sea or islets at any spot along the way before the ticket booth. The view on top is rather nice but I wouldn't describe it as incredibly amazing.

The ticket stubs are made up of 3 portions - one for the entrance, one to exchange for a bottle of water and one for using the binoculars at the top. I didn't notice these different parts and the staff who checked the tickets at the top tore away those latter two stubs without offering the entitlements to me. The so-called café up there is just a bare hole in the wall kind of set up.

It's a very short and fairly easy hike from town (probably 20 minutes one way on foot?) and hotel staff will be able to give you some basic directions to get there.

The views from Cannon Fort are stunning, especially at sunset. The museum and cannons bits are quickly viewed and quite interesting, they could do with a bit more description and translation in places.

The views from the observatory points across the island and the bay are superb - it doesn't match the up close views you get from a boat on a tour amongst the karsts but it gives you a sense of scale and perspective you can't get from on the water.

The little museum, tunnels and the actual guns are ok but the highlight was the views and they are stunning.
