“Very good value and well located hotel”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

We stayed at Vien Dong for 3 nights in November 2012. As we had not booked ahead, we stayed the first night in a room overlooking the side street and asked to be moved to a room overlooking the harbour for the next two nights where there was a balcony and a great view. We paid $10 per night (this was off season). Although the rooms are very simple, they are very clean and have air con + fan. The bathroom is essentially a wet room and again very clean. There is also a lift (nice to have given the hotel has 6 floors).
Most of all, Mr Truong at the front desk was very helpful. He provided us with useful local information but never appeared to be pushy. Like the previous reviewer we did not eat at the hotel or bought tours through it so we can't comment on that.
We can only echo the other good reviews about this hotel by saying it was a nice stay in a very affordable and simple hotel fronted by a very pleasant and helpful hotel manager.

Room Tip: Front rooms overlooking the harbour have a nice view

We came to Cat Ba as backpackers therefore not looking for a 5 star resort. For $10 (off season) a night this place was great. We had a room overlooking the harbour with a/c and tv. Bathroom is a simple wet room but all works well. We didn't eat here so can't comment on the food.

As far as tours go we didn't go through the hotel, we went through Asia outdoors (found along the same road) and had a very good day out.

We stayed here for 4 nights and unless you are a light sleeper the noise from the sea front isn't bad (note this is in off season). The guy at the front desk was very helpful and not pushy with the hotel tours as many people are.

All in all, great for backpackers. It is simple, clean affordable accommodation with a nice view and a/c room.

I stayed here with 5 friends in April 2012 whilst backpacking through south east Asia. Overall, we were very impressed with the hotel. We paid $15 per night for a room for 2, which was very reasonable. The rooms are spacious, clean and all have a good TV, air conditioning and a fan. The bathrooms are basically a wet room with shower, toilet and sink. The hotel is also in a good location, located in the middle of the seafront strip. There is a wide array of bars and restaurants near by.
**In terms of restaurants, I would advise people not to go to the floating sea food restaurants as they are extortionately priced and have a very poor service (none of the staff speak Engish). If you want a good restaurant serving western food, try the "Green Mango". If you turn left out of the front of the hotel it is about two minutes down the road.**

Overall a very nice hotel located in a lovely area. Catba island is a truely beautiful place with some great beaches(Catba 2 is the best beach). If you are staying in Catba I would recommend you stay at this hotel.

I booked a great boat tour through Hạ Long Bay in 2008 with this hotel. This time around, I paid $20 more for less time, but I agreed to it and I am fine with that. What I am not fine with is the fact that the crew of the boat that took us around rifled through our bags and stole all our cash while we were above deck. They quickly shifted us to another boat and took off for open waters.

While this may not be the fault of the Vien Dong Hotel, it was the hotel's travel agent who booked us with this boat. Please be cautious and always keep your cash/valuables on you in Hạ Long.

Stayed here for two nights in November for $10. Vien Dong is located across from the dock and has a great view. Rooms were clean and pretty big (we had a double bed and a single bed in our room). Complementary toothbrushes in the bathroom.
The Family that owns it were very nice and happy to give us options on the best places to eat and where to go (or not). Free wifi available throughout the hotel but service was spotty in our room.

They lock up the doors at night but the side door is left open for your late return. Dropped off laundry in the morning and had it back shortly after lunch.
Great place to stay

Room Tip: get a room with a view if possible. Rates increase during June-August in high season and might want...

We had reservations for two nights at this hotel ( $20/night ). Upon arrival we were happy that I have chosen to use a very beautiful place.
The hotel is located in the central tourist area, but could not believe around the hotel smell odor very annoying to drain water, all kinds of other garbage from the focus on this ... very noisy because the hotel has many echoes of the cars and motorbike. They put us in a room with balcony (balcony for all) sleep at night the people were look at the room where we stayed, and many people really go back over night. in side the bath room water upstairs fall on the head . Square front is singing and big music that were to noises.
should not stay here because have alot of new hotel overlooking the Bay of Cat Ba nice but quiet! price only $15.

My stay here was for the princely some of $12 USD per night. (price dependant on your attitude at check-in im thinking). Clean room ,awesome view, opening windows,air-con,big bathroom,& an elevator & helpful staff once the language barrier is broken. Hotel is locked up for guest safety late/nightly.Absolute main street frontage directly opposite Cat Ba Bay & tourist jetty.A street of restuarants&cafes are either side of the lobby as far as the eye can see. YUM

Room Tip: Top Floor , Top View , Get back b4 they lock it up of a night !
