“How good is this place!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013 via mobile

As committed foodies always on the look out for great food establishments, my better half & I made the hour's drive from belfast to warrenpoint in order to sample Restaurant 23's culinary wares & boy was it worth it

It did help that it was a glorious day & so the panoramic view from the full glass window over Carlingford bay helped set the atmosphere

We ordered a glass of wine each & had a look over the lunch menu. The set menu had 2 courses for £12.95, good value. We both went for Kilkeel crab & prawn on homemade fried soda bread followed by a celebration of Gloucester Old Spot pork

The starters arrived & without embellishment this was the freshest seafood I've had in years. It was gorgeous, perfect & made us really happy. We finished & stopped ourselves from licking the plate & waited on our mains

Ohio goodness, what a main. It was a slice of boned, rolled & roasted pork shoulder which was moist, soft & perfectly seasoned, beautiful. But that wasn't all, there was a perfectly cooked slice of fillet wrapped in crispy bacon, again perfectly seasoned & cooked, just the faintest hint of pinkness as good pork fillet should have. But there was more, a cold pork terrine ins French style topped with an apple & caramel jelly. The jelly was maybe just a touch too sweet but that is being picky

What also blew me away were the sides we ordered, not fancy, skinny fries, seasonal veg & on the waitress's recommendation the onion rings as I cannot resist them

In a lot of food establishments the sides are not thought about & are boring most of the time, not here! The onion rings had been soaked in vinegar before being deep fried & that added a beautiful background taste. The veg were simple roof veg but had been roasted in herbs, garlic & olive oil & were a soft, sweet tasty addition that complimented the pork well. The fries were hot & crispy, not a smudge of oil in site

We cleared our plates & ordered a coconut parfait with a passion fruit sorbet between us to finish. Whilst very good, it wasn't up to the taste sensations were had for the previous two courses

We loved it & will definitely be back!!

“Return Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Had to go back....90 mile round trip....quiet Tuesday lunchtime........ as we forgot to pay for our glass of wine on our first visit before Xmas......it was more for the pleasure than guilt!!
Crab and prawn salad and Soup Starter, then Sea Bass and Pork......all delicious.
Great Value...especially when the young lady told us to forget about paying for the wine.

“Super Tuesday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

My husband and I went in on a Tuesday night and were greeted by a lovely waitress. We thought we might be catered for by the famous Raymond but were informed that he was off tonight but has left the kitchen in the capable hands of Chris and Barry. We were given broiche and guinness wheaten bread as we browsed the menu, which was delightful. We had scallops and pate to start, followed by roast chicken and cream cabbage, a classic take on such a simple dish for myself. My husband had fish and chips commenting that he had never tasted crispier battered fish in his life, compliments to the Chefs, will definately be back. The setting and view was second to none... Exquisite!!!!
