“Once again an amazing holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2013

Just read Bobs review, maybe he was in a different place. ?? We came in May and had a great trip. The owners Dave and Chris were excellent hosts, discrete to leave us alone but there when we needed advice of where to go etc, The chalet was lovely, clean and had all of the necessaries for a good stay as well as delicious home made jam and eggs from the resident chickens in a welcome pack. . It really is a haven there. My mum loves the wildlife and Dad spent hours looking at the small lake, ponies and chickens, the dog loved them too. !! It is minutes from so much to see, we visited Kirleeham ?? House and saw the saxon jewels and visited the Owl sanctuary this time. Grewgrass lodge is a great place to chillax and enjoy the well run, clean and comfortable place. Have already rebooked. Thanks and well done .

We (three adults) stayed at Grewgrass Lodge between Christmas 2012 and New Year. We find it quite strange to read the other reviews here which rate this accommodation as five-stars, as unfortunately this was not our experience. The building did not appear to be a "lodge" as advertised and expected, but an ageing static caravan with cladding & decking. There is nothing wrong with static caravans, of course, and modern ones make great holiday homes, however we felt the owners have not adequately maintained (or cleaned) the one we stayed in. We found mould in the wardrobe of the double bedroom, loose electrical sockets (double bedroom), dead flies in one of the kitchen cupboards, the floor mats appeared dirty and there were cobwebs around the dressing table. The bed mattresses were squeaky and uncomfortable. The carpet between the lounge and kitchen was lifting at the edge, so someone could trip on this. The wallpaper in the bathroom was starting to peel, possibly due to dampness as there is no extractor fan. All the rooms (except the lounge which actually has a decent gas fire) felt cold, even with the heaters on - our clothes became damp and one of us developed a cough after sleeping in the double bedroom, despite having the small room heater on constantly. Most of the windows appeared to have perished seals and the wind whistled through the frames. Actually, considering the time of year, the weather was quite mild and therefore, in our opinion, the property is not suitable for renting in winter due to its poor insulation and inadequate heating. It was quiet on site, which was a positive, and there is some interesting wildlife to see. The peace was shattered occasionally, however, by an air-raid type siren from a neighbouring chemical plant. Bit worrying.
During our stay we asked the owner if it would be ok if some friends and family visited one evening (not to stay over) to celebrate the 60th birthday of one of us, which was reluctantly agreed to by the owner. However, on the day, the owner approached one of us and appeared quite unpleasant in his manner; he stated that no more than four people should be in the property for “health & safety and insurance reasons”. One of the visiting friends, however, is a health & safety consultant and suggested that this is incorrect as only the booked three people would be sleeping in the property in the evening, and there was more than one exit for the evening guests (in case of fire). During the evening different people came and went, so the property was never full. Even if it is the case that literally only four human beings can be in the property at the same time, the owner's manner was off-hand and officious which was not necessary. Our actual health & safety concerns related to the lack of evidence that the supplied electrical items have been tested for safety - one PAT sticker was four years out of date, the smoke alarm appeared quite old and may have been out of date, as well as the loose electrical sockets.
After some honest comments / feedback were left in the Visitors’ Book upon our departure, the owner emailed one of us. In his email he did not really respond to the problems highlighted, but spoke about the Christmas decorations which had been supplied free of charge (true but irrelevant). He threatened legal action if we made “defamatory comments” about our stay. Charmed I am sure! We are, of course, entitled to give feedback and personal opinion and are not going to be bullied in to not telling others about our negative experience.
A disappointing stay!

Grewgrass, Owner at Grewgrass Lodge, responded to this review, January 5, 2013
At no point during the guests stay were any negative issues raised by them about their accomodation, On arrival, the guests car had to be pulled out of the lawn after she drove onto it burying the wheels, damaging the lawn which didnt get off to a good start, the following morning, in the pouring rain, the owner used his own vehicle to pull her out.At no time when she booked was there any mention of a 60th birthday party for 11 persons,we as owners feel we are well within our rights informing the guest that to have 11 people in a small lodge is not a good idea ,the elderly lady in the other lodge had difficulty in accessing her lodge due to the car parking issues, and did mention it to us. To not speak to the owners, who live on site, at anypoint throughout their stay, then disappear on the morning of departure without a word, not even by phone and to find disrespectful comments in our visitor book was very rude . I think this sums up these particular guests. Also, at no point at booking time was any mention they would be bringing a small rodent with them. In the lodge next door, we had a 78yr old lady from Australia, coming from 30+ degree heat to the North East of England, absolutely loved her experience and her lodge. We have had hundreds of very satisfied customers here at Grewgrass Lodge , many returning three or four times a year since we started in 2006 so we think that speaks volumes. These complainers are entitled to their opinions, same as anyone else who stays here, but they need to get their facts right before going public, our testimonials are open for independant scrutiny, so you will then see who is speaking the truth. We are not a 5 or 6 star establishment as these guests seem to have wanted but a genuine comfortable lodge accomodation. The carpet was perfectly fine before these guests went in, it appears now pulled out of its holding bar on the floor. The siren is the normal one which goes off every week, testing the systems, lasting less than a minute, they will have known that due to them having relatives nearby, the smoke alarms are tested every six months with new batteries in each time and are not old or out dated. Our PAT testing was only done in April 2012 and we have the electricians contact details if required to prove this. If they had looked properly, they would have seen this, so much for their 'elf and safety consultant" As for renting in the winter period, for the last 5 years the both lodges have been fully booked each Xmas and New Year, with this year over 15 enquiries to stay here in the winter,
Prior to these guests, we have had over 17 different guests in this same lodge, from May 2012 until Christmas, some comments are as follows' Excellent, tidy accomodation, had a lovely stay despite the weather, very pleasant as always, once again, a haven,5th time visit as relaxing as ever, 1st time visit , found everything first rate, welcoming friendly warm comfortable and relaxing will recommend to others and hope very much to return, great welcome nice hosts"
Finally, we suggest to anyone, have a look at our testimonial page on our website to see what people have said about us.
To any other accomodation providers in the world, be warned, just keep a look out for this particular type of guest, you may already have been visited, it may happen in the future but honesty and integrity rules in good, homely, friendly, comfortable accomodation.

A little piece of heaven nestled in a small holding where chickens roam, rescued ponies graze, ponds hold wildlife snapshoys and the accomodation is clean, comfortable and evrything you need for a well earned break. David and Christine are kindness itself and provide a bounty of fresh food and produce. Have been 3 times in 2 years and cant wait to get back there to recharge.It.s worth the 6 hour trip!! Took my parents who are in their 80,s, they loved the walks with the dog and the wraparound ease of the stay, Well done a gem of a find.

Room Tip: Both Cabins are the same. Peaceful and individual with good privacy

We have just had 4 days at Grewgrass lodges, there are two wooden lodges of traditional style in the huge garden of Christine and Davids peaceful wildlife haven. The lodges have huge patio doors from which is a ever changing scene of wildlife. Hens, pheasants, ducks and ducklings, wild rabbits, moorhens and even a huge fox visit you from sunrise to sunset. The lovely friendly ponies watch you from across the drive. The lodges are ideal for families and couples who appreciate the wonderful surroundings that David and christine have created.A most friendly welcome made by Christine and David starts your holiday and nothing is too much trouble for them to ensure your holiday is most enjoyable and stress free. I would recommend these lodges for a restful holiday close to many beaches and towns of the North East yorkshire.

My husband and I and our adult son spent an idyllic week at Grewgrass Lodge and would gladly have stayed much longer if our schedule had permitted. What a wonderful environment and what a peaceful and restful week it was too. David & Christine are the ideal hosts and make every effort to ensure their guests have a lovley holiday. The facilities are clean and comfortable and everything that could reasonably be expected is provided. We will definitely return when we can beacuse in our whole 8 weeks away this stay was the most relaxing.
