“Don't have the sausages!!!”
Reviewed June 5, 2012

My husband and I visited the cafe side yesterday - our first time in there since it changed hands. Although the new decor is very pleasant, the minimal look has taken away the character, which is a shame.
As I didn't fancy fish, decided to go for the sausage dinner........big mistake! Have to be the most disgusting sausages I have ever tasted - seemed to be of very poor quality and certainly not an experience I ever want to repeat. Hubby's fish was greasy and not a very pleasant tasting grease either.......
All in all, I'm afraid to say that Russell's have now lost these regular customers - won't be going back.

“WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO RUSSELL'S?”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

My partner and I live in Redcar and are regular visitors to the restaurant. We have loved not just the excellent fish & chips on offer but the atmospheric decor making it a pleasant eating experience. Even our friends from Newcastle are big fans making a regular pilgrimage to 'Mr Russell's ' as they called it!
NOT ANYMORE! The place has been re-furbished and gone is all the nautical decor. The walls are primrose in colour with minimalistic (at best) accessories. It now looks like a sanitized doctors waiting room that just happens to serve fish and chips! But the real real tragedy of this is the quality of the food has also changed - FOR THE WORST! Pale greasy batter on the fish and dry, plastic chips served on plates swimming in grease because the fish had not been drained properly! New, young staff who have had personality bypasses. What has happened to the original friendly staff? There is NO atmosphere whatsoever, unlike the old Russells. The visit today was a sad shock to the system and we will be going to Barnacles in Middlesbrough from now on. Redcar has lost a jewel in her crown.
