“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

We stayed at the hotel during the best part of the summer and benefitted from the full use of the beer garden, which was the perfect location to spend the evenings eating and drinking. The food was of a very high standard and affordable (we had booked a two night stay including breakfast and a three course evening meal).

The staff were very helpful and attentive. A minor problem with the room was dealt with quickly and without fuss. The room was lovely. We chose the more expensive option but felt it was worth it.

Overall the experience was a very good one and should we visit the area again we would stay here again. We'd recommend it.

Room Tip: The more expensive room was worth the extra cost

Traditional ales from the local brewery, friendly staff - recommended by friends who visit the area every year. We visited the hotel after a day out with our friends who know and visit this area annually for a camping holiday. 4 adults and 3 under tens sat outside next to the huge, rectangular fish pond which is nestled at the foot of an expansive lawn which backs onto an orchard. The view is spectacular and overlooks the village with a birds eye view across to the hills, woodland and farms about 2 miles away. We really enjoyed the local ale and the children loved playing on the lawn making full use of the 3 big bean bags on offer. I cant speak for the food or accommodation but I imagine it would be to a high standard judging by the attention to detail and standard of upkeep. Absolutely recommended if only to quench your thirst, a must see visit if in and around the area!

Just had a really enjoyable break at the castle. Very friendly staff made us very welcome. Good real ales, which an be enjoyed from the elevated terrace at the rear of the hotel (guests can use their own terrace) with superb views of the surrounding hills. Very good large room with comfortable beds. Food excellent.
Very good base foe exploring Shropshire.
In sum, very relaxed and enjoyable visit.

The hotel is well situated on the site of the old Bishop's castle. The food is excellent and a great selection of locally brewed beers. The hotel is well organised and great credit must go to Henry, Rebecca and the other staff that run the hotel. They make you very welcome and are very helpful. This is a great location and a wonderful hotel.

We arrived at this hotel on the off chance of a room being available. We were warned that the only free double was small, and it was but no smaller than we expected. It was clean, fresh and well decorated with lovely views. The price was very reasonable for what we got. The gardens are lovely with loads of outdoor seating so we enjoyed a couple of hours with a bottle, enjoying the view on a comfy outdoor settee. We were made very welcome by all the helpful staff and enjoyed our evening meal with was fairly basic but good nonetheless.
Overall, great value in a very realxing setting, thanks to all the staff.
(as a side issue there is a chiming clock in the village that chimes all night. If you sleep light take your earplugs).

This hotel is situated at the top of the town and thus has marvellous views of the surrounding hills. There is plenty of parking and a useful well appointed patio/garden at the rear. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was reasonably well cooked and the menu quite varied. The building is Grade II listed and has been well maintained. Our room was rather disappointing, being small and with minimal windows that we could only see out of by standing up. The room fittings were old fashioned (particularly lino on the bathroom floor), although the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was a good size; to have then installed the smallest shower cubicle we have ever seen was inexplicable. The shower itself defeated all our efforts to control the water temperature. The room rate was significantly more than we had paid in other hotels/B&Bs in Shropshire with better quality rooms. Overall not good value for money.
