Ainola is beautifully preserved ans set in its own small woodland. Whilst not as quiet as when the Jean Sibelius himself lived there, it still has a tranquil feel to it and it is not difficult to imagine Jean working there, waiting for inspiration. The house is kept as it was when his wife died in the late 1960s, even his small bathroom is there with its shaving mirror on the wall. The guides to the house are very informative and very helpful. The small cafe on the site (not in the house itself) provides a chance for refreshment as well as a comfort stop.

When you travel to Helsinki, I suggest you include on your tour itinerary visiting the beautiful home of Jean Sibelius, a world-class composer. Built on a pine-clad hill near Lake Tuusula in Järvenpää, about 30 kilometers away from the city, your visit to Jean Sibelius' house does not only let you have an insight about Sibelius' personal life but it also offers you a beautiful panoramic view of this picturesque Finnish countryside. So, it's like hitting two birds on one shot.

I had a very enjoyable trip to the atmospheric and beautifully located Ainola. This really worthwhile for Sibelius enthusiasts, especially on a nice day. It was easy on the train using the directions in this forum from Rarisang and MreMargaretRiver but here are some updates: As Rarisang says trains depart every day from Helsinki to Kyrölä once every hour at 48 minutes past the hour, returning from Kyrölä at 43 minutes past the hour. The trip takes 29 minutes. When we traveled from Helsiniki you had to buy the tickets before boarding the train and validate them on the train - while on the return leg you could buy them from the conductor. At Kyrölä, as MreMargaretRiver says, after leaving the platform you walk on the road back towards Helsinki and then take the first turn under the rail line, where you will see a sign to Ainolo (1 km). As of September 2013 the footpath diverts onto a meandering temporary route by a new road, which is a little confusing, as they are putting in a new road bridge. However just keep following the signs for pedestrians/bicycles and you eventually join the old trail which takes you right to Ainolo.

Me and my Mother-in-law spent a morning discovering this beautiful home of Aino and Jean Sibelius in Järvenpää, Finland. By car it was very easy to get there, but I could imagine it being slightly painful when (and if) using public transport.

The house itself is amazing, and having a guided tour even though we forgot to book it in advance was just a bonus. Got so much information about the family, about Jean and Aino... who is the heart and soul of this place. When stepping inside the house you can see the piano, portraits and famous fireplace but when going further inside... you just have to admire how creative Aino was when it comes to working solutions, interiors etc.

You have to stop by the Sauna and check out the garden!....And have delicious organic coffee at Kahvila Aulis... blueberry pie was divine as well!
