“Beautiful Mimi's”
Reviewed April 1, 2008

My girlfriend and stayed at Mimi's for 4 nights at the end of March, and absolutely loved our time there. Mimi's itself is exactly as described: a guest house (not a full service hotel), with clean, spacious, and well appointed rooms. We really enjoyed being able to cook our own food, both in our studio's kitchen and outside on Mimi's grill, surrounding by palm trees and tropical birds. A real highlight was grilling up some locally caught, wonderfully fresh dorado ($2 a pound!). David and Mark are perfect hosts.

The Guanica region itself is very nice, and very relaxing. It certainly moves at a different pace than the more touristy areas of San Juan. Mimi's is a short walk away from a number of amazing private (more or less; only the locals know of them) beaches, and a short drive away from even more wonderful beaches.

A day trip into San German is worth the short drive, as is taking a boat or a kayak out to Gilligan's Island to snorkel in the mangrove channels there.

  • Liked — The open space and natural beauty of Mimi's location.
  • Disliked — Nothing personally, but my girlfriend was a little bothered by some mosquitos.

We spent just two nights at Mimi's Guest House and were delighted with our stay. The guest house is at the end of a quiet road and has interesting trails that can be accessed right from the grounds. It's an easy drive to nice beaches and other attractions such as La Paguera and the Guanica Dry Forest reserve. A great place for a quiet few days enjoying the natural history of Puerto Rico's south coast.

Decor is colorful, tropical, shabby chic. There's a fully equipped kitchen if you want to cook some of your own meals. Our hosts, David and Mark, could not have been more pleasant and helpful.

Only negative was a brief period of noseeums each evening.

We literally stumbled upon Mimi's and were delighted by the genuinely warm hospitality of our hosts. The location in the middle of the Guanica Dry Forest would excite anyone looking to really get away from it all, and yet have the conveniences of a comfortable bed (worth a paragraph by itself), hot shower, and cooking facilities.
Did I mention the comfortable bed? Warning: You will be subjected to decadence of luxurious bed linens and towels. These may seem to be a contradiction to the stark surroundings of the Dry Forest, but they are really in full harmony with the richness of the starlit sky and the scale of the abundant beauty of the region.
Enter with a sense of adventure and humor and you will not be disappointed.
High maintenance people - keep away - this is not for you.

My husband and I loved Mimi’s, a lovely remodeled B&B located down one of two roads with settlements in the heart of the dry forest of Guanica. Our island style apartment was brightly decorated with all the necessities needed for cooking and a most pleasant stay. The owners, Mark and David, were gracious, knowledgeable, very helpful, great cooks and perfect hosts. On our first night we arrived to a delicious dinner on our porch under a moonlit sky filled with stars. Remnants were lunch for two days. The next morning Mark and David took us on a short walk to one of the most beautiful beaches in PR. Hiking, bird watching, swimming, and kayaking are all within easy reach. At night, the Ponce waterfront, the fishing village of La Parguera, or further down the road, the party town of Boqueron, can be reached by car. For a peaceful stay off the beaten path near lovely beaches and the dry forest, then Mimi’s is the place.

My husband an I fell upon this place by weird circumstances,we were cancelled by Mary Lee's last minute,so delighted to be so as it turned out,It is a gem of a place, clean, comfortable, and welcoming..the room we rented with our 2 year old was perfect, we lacked for nothing,a sweet hide a way with a kitchen (fridge with ice, microwave if you need it, towels, plates cups, fresh linens etc.) The Hosts David and Mark are beyond gracious, they made us feel comfortable and relaxed, and most importantly there for us if we needed anything,David even walked us to the most beautiful beach that is their backyard just so we were comfortable ..which we were..I could go on and on,but it was a delightful experience . If you are the type that are looking for resturants and nightlife,no,....if you are looking for a rest and peace and star gazing..at your own speed...this is it.. I almost hate to write this because now you know.....and the secret is out.....so book a room go get your groceries on the way and chill out... we did...

My girlfriend and I stayed at Mimi's Guest House in Guanica PR for five days during the Christmas holidays. We had an exceptionally pleasant time there. When we travel we prefer to stay someplace that is quiet, in a naturally beautiful area, and where we can cook for ourselves. Mimi's is all of these. It consists of a few nicely appointed apartments on a few acre property within the Guanica Dry Forest. From there we went hiking in the preserve (dry and hot, even in December, so bring water!), and nearly every day hiked down to the Ballena beach, a beautiful and clean little beach which can be gotten to only by foot or boat. David and Mark, who own and run the guest house, were very nice and helpful, making sure that we had what we needed in the apartment and giving us recommendations on what to do and where to go in the area. They were so kind as to invite us to their Christmas dinner. Any qualifications we had are entirely minor, for example, the apartment kitchen might be updated (though still entirely adequate). Another thing to be aware of when traveling in PR is that the local weather can create surges in the mosquito population. It is wise to bring deet-based repellents.

My husband and I with another couple recently stayed at Mimi’s and we loved it. Looking for budget accommodations can always be scary because the website may have trick photos or exaggerate about themselves or their locale. This was not the case with Mimi’s Guest House or their website. Upon arrival we knew we made the right choice. It is very peaceful place on a roomy piece of land. The decor in the rooms was fun but simple, easy to live in. Everything was very clean. It was a social week as there were other guests there close to our age that we all connected with and even barbecued together one night. The hosts were extremely helpful but not in our hair like some small inn owners can be like. The beaches in the area were plentiful and all different in their own way. Southwest Puerto Rico is another world from San Juan and day trips in the area were gorgeous and adventurous. I don’t only recommend Mimi’s but the entire area if you want a unique explorative island vacation.
