“Beautiful and Nostalgic”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

I stayed overnight with my family earlier this month and really enjoyed my visit. The hammocks under the trees to the right side of the property were very relaxing. The time I spent in the pier in the evening was magical. The staff went out of their way to make sure they could accommodate a family member with limited mobility on short notice. The handicapped accessible room was very clean and comfortable although the shower could have a bit better drainage to avoid spilling so much water on the rest of the bathroom. The food in the restaurant was good and only let down a little by an order that wasn't served as requested. I accidentally left behind a battery charger for my camera and the staff made sure to store it securely until we could arrange to pick it up at a later date. Something for which I am very grateful. As a history enthusiast I appreciate the fact that the property has been restored to it's original purpose as a hotel (originally part of the company town supporting the Guanica sugar mill). That however, means that it sits in a mangrove so if you are looking or a place where you can step out of the room and walk to a sandy beach, this may not be the place for you. There are many wonderful beaches a relatively sort distance however, making this hotel a great jump off point for many activities on the Southwest corner of the island. I am looking forward to a future stay on my next visit to Puerto Rico!

We live in San Juan and my daughter had a school report to do on the lighthouse in Cabo Rojo and a river in Ponce. We decided to make it an overnight event and looked for a mid-point. We found this "tropical inn" in Trip Advisor and decided to give it a try. We reserved a two double bed room. We were placed in front of the pool and next to the restaurant. I don't mind "outdoor" and plumbing noise. If you do, request a room on the other end of the parador.
The room is smallish but not uncomfortable. The bathroom basic and clean, plenty of hot water. TV worked fine with very basic cable. The room also has a micro-wave, mini fridge, and coffee maker and wi-fi. Air conditioning unit was quiet.
The staff was very friendly. This is a no smoking hotel -good! If you do smoke, you are directed to the parking or to the back of the hotel. Even if you don't smoke, visit the back of the hotel. It sits right on a beautiful bay, Ensenada Bay, the afternoon breeze was gentle and the sound of the water lapping on the shore was very peaceful.

Room Tip: if you like quiet, request a room on the opposite side of the pool

Very clean, nice pool (maybe a little on the small side), relaxing views and surroundings. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was good. Room was a nice size, only problems were the AC unit blew right on the bed and we were unable to adjust the temp or fan speed and the toilet would run until you "jiggle the handle."

The building and grounds are beautiful. Close by Gilligan's island and the Dry Forest. The corner room on the second floor was small and tired but the bed was comfortable and clean. There didn't seem to be much hot water in the morning for a shower. We didn't use the pool but it looked nice. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the staff were friendly. The check in could have been alot smoother and the front desk staff were not that helpful with info about kayaking in the area. Wi-fi only worked near the reception. There are hammocks on the grounds that unfortunately were wet. A nice addition would be to hang a few hammocks on the balconies near the guest rooms. Overall this was ok for one night for the price ($100) but I would not stay for an extended stay.

Stayed one week at this parador ("Tropocal Inn they call it). The rooms are average, no fancy features, TV has a few channels (1 or 2 in english), all furniture is old, the place looks old but is kept clean, meaning no crawling insects that we could see. The air conditioner worked great which is a must due to the high humidity and mosquitoes in the area. Bathroom was remodeled and adequate with the usual giveaways and clean linen. There is a small gym that nobody uses, a nice swimming pool (the highlight of the place) but no other outdoor activity areas. The premises are located by the seashore but there is no beach, not even nearby boating facilities, you have to go to Gilligan's Island for that (ask around). The dining room is better than expected, great service but food is average at best. Never ate anything other than breakfast. Our room was not ready (we got there before check-in time) but they offered us one anyway which they had just cleaned, DON'T DO THAT! They use a heavy duty cleaner with an awful smell and it takes several hours for the smell to fade away, even at night there was a strong odor, but bearable. This is by no means your standard two or three star mainland hotel, but if you are looking for reasonable rates and a location in the PORTA DEL SOL area, you are in the right place. Don't go to nearby La Parguera Inns, they are sorry over-rated places. The overall service at the Guanica Parador was great and they will try to accommodate your wishes if they can. And there is an adjacent wine & music place for adult entertainment.

Room Tip: Ask for a second story room, they are slightly more expensive but roomier and have a better view.

We enjoyed our stay at Parador Guanica. But note that this hotel is not for everyone. The room was spacious and clean. It was on the second floor and there is no elevator or bellhops to help with bags, which was fine with us. However, If you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground floor room. There is a very nice swimming pool that children were enjoying. The room cost includes meals, which is good because there are not a lot of places to eat good food nearby. The food was good but the dessert flan was the worst flan I have ever eaten. They do not have a liquor license - something about being too close to the church across the street. So, if you like to imbibe, be sure to bring your own. The dining room has a dark and claustrophobic feel so we chose to eat outside on the porch. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The hotel has the ambience of bygone days. It is set on a former sugar operation of some kind and there are refurbished cane benches all around. The landscaping of the property is not manicured but interesting with some huge, old trees. At sunset, the mosquitoes came out in droves. So bring bug repellant. There is a small playground for kids. I recommend this hotel to families with kids. There was nothing to do after dinner so I wouldn't recommend this hotel to persons traveling solo.

This is a jewel no one really knows about. Having stayed in San Juan at the Caribe Hilton and in Rincon, my husband & I agreed, this place in Ensenada was by far the best. It is quaint, personal, clean, friendly, and very professional. We felt very much at home here. When we return, this is the place where we will stay. The food is fabulous. The staff extremely warm and accommodating. I highly recommend this place to everyone.
