Just returned after a 2 week stay and have to say that you would have to search and travel hard to find better. The hotel is lovely but what really makes this place truly excellent is the staff. Throughout the day Dennis (who always puts the needs of the guests first) , the girls in the bar, Miro (Dimitar) and the chef's never stop in making your holiday truly memorable.
The Greek nights were very good but just remember it is 3 courses and as much as you can eat so take it easy. The Greek and BBQ nights are buffet style but are normally served to you however this did not happen in the 2nd week so guests who were attending the evening for the first time proceeded to attempt to load up both starter and main on a tiny starter plate. (The mains plates which are huge were underneath the main course counter).
Drinks are pricey especially the wine but remember the hotel does have to pay the extortionate taxes where as the local bars etc ‘avoid’ it so can afford to offer it cheaper.
Katelios is a lovely beach side village with a handful of taverna’s and a couple of cocktail style bars. The mood is relaxed and easy and you won’t struggle to find good choices. Shops are limited to a couple of supermarkets and a kiosk but you can take the boat taxi to Skala which is good fun.
We hired a boat from the sea front (Sea Breeze) and had a great day. The owner shows you everything you need to know and takes you out first to make sure you are OK and then it’s off to any secret cove or secluded private beach you wish. My tip would be to turn right out of the harbour which is far more prettier but just ask the owner and he will tell you.
We also took a jeep safari with Elements who’s owner and our driver was George. He really was brilliant and very knowledgeable of the Island. He took us to find the wild horses and within a couple of hours of ascending the 2nd highest mountain in Greece he found them. We managed to get some great pics. He then took us to an abandoned village that was toppled in the earthquake of 1953 and although sad was very interesting to see how the residents of the Island use to live. We then went for a private lunch in a Taverna then on to the beach for some private time where the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin was made.
This was a great holiday and the Utopia is a great place to stay. My only negative comments would be that the beds are so hard you will struggle to get a good nights sleep. The other challenge is trying to stand in the bath whilst having a shower.
PS. Thank you Dennis (Kaka)
