Description: This Wetherspoon pub is named after the last Squire of Pontypool, who was also a notable benefactor to the town. Pontypool's development really began in 1588, when Richard Hanbury, a London goldsmith, bought land here for making iron. The interests of the Hanbury family, and Pontypool, fluctuated, until Major John Hanbury (born 1664) decided to move to the town and build Pontypool House. The 158 acres of enclosed parkland were purchased by the council, in 1920, from John Capel Hanbury, the last Squire of Pontypool. He was a notable benefactor, gifting the sites of Pontypool Hospital, the grammar school, the library, the market and St Hilda's Church.

“Reasonably priced food and drink”

This is part of the Wetherspoon chain I believe and you can get fed and watered for a reasonable fee. Usually packed to the rafters on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Average Wetherspoons”
Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

There's nothing wrong with Pontypool wetherspoons, but there is nothing exciting about it either. It's your average spoons that you'd find anywhere else in the UK.
The food is well priced but it's the usual samey microwaved stuff that you get in any other wetherspoons across the country. The food isn't awful it's just not special.
Most alcohol is well priced however I think the spirits are a bit pricey.
Not a terrible place but nothing interesting about it either. All wetherspoons are the same!

“Friendly Wetherspoons with good food”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

I was brought up in Pontypool, and returning here after 25 years, the changes in the area are dramatic. many of the pubs I remember have closed, as have many of the shops. Cwmbran, the "new town" a few miles away, has all but decimated what was once a proud and busy town.

Yet here we are with a fairly large Wetherspoons that seems to have bucked the trend, established itself well in the town and provides a very good service to the locals. And let's be clear, this is a place for the locals. It's arguable that pontypool hasn't done much to attract people from outside, and in that regard, it's probably telling that the John Capel Hanbury has been open for 6 years, yet this is the first review on Trip Advisor. Pontypool, it seems, is a nice place to come from, rather than a place to go to...

So, on arrival, you'll be presented with a fairly standard Wetherspoons, but it's clear that the staff take pride in its appearance and it's spotless. If my failing memory serves, the pub is actually on the site of the old Williams Brothers bicycle shop. Judging by the apparent level of fitness of the current Wetherspoons customers, you may draw a conclusion around why the Willliams Brothers closed their bicycle shop...

Back to the pub: very friendly staff all round, unlike many Wetherspoons, where friendliness seems to be reserved for inter-colleague conversations. A friendly and relaxed atmosphere pervades the whole place (in the lunchtime - no so on a weekend night!) and orders are taken and served quickly and efficiently.

The food menu is standard Wetherspoons fayre. That said, Wetherspoons have really upped their game over the last few years, and I can honestly say now that the combination of value and quality is spot on, especially at this price point.

This is not a place I would go for a special occasion, but for a great value breakfast or lunch, it's hard to beat. Recommended!
