Most major trunk routes now have one or more flat-pack hotels from the major chains. The A4042 roundabout at Pontypool has a Premier Inn and a Best Western. We stayed at the Best Western, last week for three nights whilst exploring South Wales. It is snuck behind a KFC and MacDonalds. The clientele when we were staying were predominantly those on “business” rather than holiday. The hotel specification in my opinion is somewhat higher than the competition, but what makes the difference here is the attitude of the staff. All were friendly and very welcoming which is a pleasant surprise from such an establishment. This is led from the front desk by Liz who seems to know everything and apparently has a doctorate in time travel but don’t tell her I told you.

We booked this last minute and was not disappointed. The hotel was very clean, safe, and most of all the staff were brilliant. The location isn't great for just going off walking but they couldn't be more helpful in pointing us in the right direction, booking taxis, getting us train times etc. very friendly service and we felt very welcome. Overall a great weekend away :)

Purchased a two night deal from KGB as wanted to do some Nordic walking in the area, due to a good deal to be honest was not expecting much, but how wrong was I. From the moment we arrived the staff were so friendly, welcoming and nothing was to much trouble, even helping us out with arranging where to eat ( much thanks to Joshua who was a real star) The hotel was spotless and a great breakfast considering the limited facilities that the staff had available but great variety. The only thing I could see anyone complaining about is the location, as just off the motorway, but was not an issue for us, all in all we had a fab stay and would definitely stay again.

One of the cleanest, most orderly travel hotels we have had the pleasure of staying at. Manageress Liz St John will pull out the stops to make your stay just right though some of her staff fall short of her own personal standards, such as the receptionist upon our arrival, who refused to hear my requests for a quiet room at the back of the hotel and wouldn't budge an inch, even though it was a quiet part of the week. thankfully the cold wet weather meant that the double glazed windows remained closed and the severe traffic outside was somewhat deadened, though my wife still thought it was intrusive enough to affect her sleep. Bad weather and the traffic made us book dinner in the hotel and again Liz St John was to the rescue with a good fist of a meal and a reasonably priced bottle of ale. Breakfast as previous threads will testify is a buffet type affair which is again poorly waited. Yet as for value for money....this place is about as good as it gets. Try it, but demand a room at the rear.

Room Tip: First floor at the rear....a must.

Bought via Groupon. Excellent value combined with great accommodation, service&staff. 1 minor complaint; a dishonest couple ordered food etc and billed it to our room number but reception canceled I after we disputed it and explained we were at the local Harvester at the time. This may be a common problem. Great location and town. We would happily go back as a family again and highly recommend this modern and quality hotel. Great room and facilities and excellent breakfast etc available. Explore the great surroundings and history.

Really clean rooms with a good hospitality tray. Bed was really comfortable. Complimentary toiletries and bathroom was really clean. Can't fault the room. Receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast could have been better, the baked beans, scrambled egg and bacon were cold, I had to ask the waiter to heat mine up in a microwave. The waiter wasn't checking to see if items needed to be replenished, I had to ask for more plates to be put out , and for more bread to be put out. Apart from the disappointing breakfast everything else was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the car park.

Spent one night at this hotel as visiting Cardiff for the rugby. The Receptionist was very friendly and helpful on arrival and advised us on the best way to get into Cardiff. We were phoned a taxi to Cwmbran train station which was only about 10 minutes away. The train into Cardiff was about £8 return p.p. Our room was small but clean and comfortable. A very enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend to others.
