“A real gem of a pub”
Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

We visited The Cott Inn for an evening meal with family, we weren't staying there, so can't comment on the rooms but if the rest of the place is anything to go by they should be great. We all had something different from the menu and were all very pleased with our choices. We chose from the main menu and a specials board. The staff are all really lovely , quite young and bubbly , nothing was to much trouble for them. It wasn't particularly cheap, but it was money well spent. The building itself has been used as an Inn/pub for 500 years and it is full of character, the newly renovated thatched roof is amazing. Good beer garden aswell. Highly recommended.

The recent owners have enhanced this lovely inn with altering the character. The rooms are much improved (ours was 6) with modern shower and furnishings. The garden is lovely and the new paved terrace a real suntrap. Food was excellent including breakfast - as a fussy coffee drinker an Espresso machine would be an added bonus. All in all a great stay with friendly and efficient staff. A terrific acoustic duo provided added pleasure on Sunday night without being at all obtrusive.

The inn is a little bit off the beaten track but it is well worth staying here. It is a charming long thatched building and the bar /eating area has bags of character. We had a very good evening meal and the beer was well kept. The rooms are on the first floor and are accessed by narrow curving stairs. The rooms are well laid out with a modern ensuite. Breakfast is served in a separate room off the bar area and there was a good selection on offer.
The inn has a large car park and there is an outside seating area for relaxing with a drink on a warm evening.
All the staff were friendly and very helpful. On a Sunday Nina & Pete played and sang some excellent music at low decibel levels. Nina's singing would easily win on "The Voice" and Pete was majestically skillful with his guitar riffs.
I would recommend staying here.

This is a beautiful building. The place is very atmospheric, with the bar area retaining the charm of an old country pub, whilst the rooms upstairs are modern and clean. The bed was comfortable and the shower worked properly. Tea and coffee is provided in the rooms.
Obviously this is a pub, and as such there is a certain amount of noise from the bar below. However, the live music stopped at a sensible time and there was not much noise after 10pm, meaning a good night's sleep was possible, even in a room directly over the main entrance and bar.
The property has lovely hanging baskets and garden pots, which make it even more attractive. Best of all, there is a new beer garden terrace to the left of the building, which has been very well done and is ideally placed to catch the last of the evening sunshine.
The meal we ate here was very good, and the staff were pleasant. There doesn't seem to be a reception area for 'hotel' part, but everything was swiftly and efficiently handled from the bar.
I understand from locals that the pub is under new management, and that it is improving as a result. Some older reviews weren't good, but don't let this put you off, it's a lovely old place now!
If I were to suggest any improvements, I would say that there needs to be more choice in the continental breakfast to bring it up to a good hotel standard. Perhaps it could be served earlier also? It also seems that the hallways and stairwell are a bit tired and could benefit from refurbishment, new carpets etc. This would complete the fresh look that has been achieved in the guestrooms.
Overall very happy with our stay - thank you!

Found a home away from home. Run by warm and caring hosts. Provides all the facilities of standard B&B. Beautiful ambience. Enjoyed the food and drink at the pub on the ground floor. Reasonably priced. Would recommand it to family and friends.

I live in Dartington so this is my local pub. I have seen the present landlord turn this place around. Anyone reading these reviews, check the dates, you'll notice the bad ones are the old ones. We only ever go to eat, so can't comment on the rooms, but for food its great. The staff are always friendly, the menu varied and interesting and the landlord takes personal responsibility to ensure things are running smoothly. One of the nicest pubs in the area.
