This review is long overdue, but better late than never I guess. My wife and had the pleasure of staying at Baja Bungalows last May after a week long visit in Cabo San Lucas. CSL was great and we enjoyed our stay there, but Cabo Pulmo is much more our style. It's quiet, laid back, has the real feel of Mexico and the beautiful Baja environment is largely intact.
We stayed in the upper unit of the "New House", which has nice views of the sea (better than they appear on the website) and of the surrounding desert and has a great deck - part shaded, part sunny - from which to enjoy the views and the peaceful serenity of the area. When we initialy researched lodging in CP, the only concern I had about Baja Bungalows was the distance to the beach. But that turned out to not really be an issue and while it would be nice to be right on the beach and it was kind of cool to experience the desert while still in view of the sea.
The unit was spacious, clean, attractive and comfortable. We didn't do a lot of cooking since we were only there for a couple of days, but the kitchen seemed to be pretty well equiped and included everything you should need. The refrigerator worked great as did everything else we used. We met some interesting guests at BB and enjoyed their company and getting to know them.
Mark was great and provided good tips on the area (beaches to visit, snorkel guides, restaraunts). We did an excellent snorkel trip that gave us the opportunity to snorkel above a school of manta rays, swim with the sea lions and visit numerous different sites.
The beach directly in front of the village is a bit rocky, but it's a short walk to a sandy beach. It's amazing to walk just south of town and not spot another soul on the beach as far as you can see. A minor negative about the town was that one of the locals fired up his diesel generator after sundown and ran it for a few hours. Not a major issue and not the fault of BB. Mark mentioned that some of the residents were working to resolve that and it's probably resolved by now. We tried a couple of the local restaurants and both were great. El Caballero made excellent chilaquiles for breakfast and La Palapa had great tacos for lunch and an outstanding steak and shrimp dinner (better than anything I had in CSL and 1/3 of the price). Everyone we met in Cabo Pulmo was warm, friendly and helpful.
We loved Cabo Pulmo and Baja Bungalows. As others have stated, it's probably not for everyone. If you're looking for Spring break type party action, lots of night life, fine dining options and resort amenities, it's probably not for you. If you looking for a casual, laid back adventure getaway with deserted beaches, great snorkeling/diving opportunities, the feeling that you're really in Mexico and the chance to experience some of Baja's natural beauty, Cabo Pulmo is probably a place you would appreciate and enjoy. And Baja Bungalows is a great place to stay while you're there.
We're looking forward to visiting Cabo Pulmo and Baja Bungalows again in the future.
