David and Stella Cash are the perfect hosts. A warm welcome into their comfortable home soon makes you feel at ease and relaxed after, in our case, a long journey. The bedroom was so luxurious with lovely linen, Arran Aromatics toilletries, books to browse and views to loose your thoughts in. But unfortunately the time here was very limited. Drinks and canapés beckoned with friends in the drawing room. We arrived later than planned the single track twisty road from Salen takes longer than I had thought.
Dinner in the dining room is a set menu so if you if you have any requests, better for all, to call ahead. The menu, for our taste, was absolutely delicious. To start spinach, cherry and goats cheese salad which was, for us, a new combination but ooh so tasty. Mains was fresh lobster, salad, roast new potatoes and salad leaves. Well that is a combination that works every time and all sourced within walking distance or very nearly. Dessert was their special goats milk salted caramel ice cream and fresh strawberries. Another new combination but a firm favourite. Stella who is the kitchen goddess has an excellent palate and we, all three of us, could not fault it. There was daughter Pheobe's hand made chocolates and coffee to finish in a haze of loveliness. So pleased where we that it was late before we left out hosts company and enjoyed a deep slumber in our very comfortable beds.
Breakfast came too soon. There was so many choices from standard, for many, favourite cereal packets to homemade granola, fruit compote and freshly made on the premises goats cheese yoghurt. Cooked breakfast selection offered many variations to suit your hunger and personal requests. We had duck eggs with ours. All served with home baked bread toasted and their own preserves.
David is a lovely host, attentive, considerate without being intrusive. My only disappoint was that one night was not enough. You must stay at least two nights to get the full benefit and enjoy the house, garden, and this very special peninsula. Even pop across to Mull for a few hours or more. Sadly we had to leave but hoping to return soon..
The price? Well it is true you pay for what you get. The quality offered here is exceptional, the food freshly prepared with local produce should be celebrated. Then there is this very special location in the most westerly tip of Scotland. For us it was worth every penny.
