Athirappilly is popular among tourists. Athirappilly Falls is one of the best places to visit in Kerala. Another popular waterfall to visit is the Vazhachal Falls. Athirappilly Falls is a part of Chalakudy river and it is approximately 80 feet in height. Athirappilly is easily reachable from Chalakudy by taking a vehicle for rent or by bus from the Chalakudy private bus terminal.

This is truly one of the great natural wonders in this part of the world. Go after June when the water is the maximum. Apparently it dries up significantly from Jan to March. Do take the path down to the foot of the falls- mildly difficult but definitely worth the effort. The area has been maintained beautifully and is impeccably clean. Most tourist spots in India are strewn with plastic and discarded food packets but this was not seen here.

One of the highlights of our Kerala trip - this is a certain must visit.

A 1-1.5 hr drive from Kochi airport, it is best to club it with the flight. We had an evening flight & we spent the first half at Athirappily (& Kodanad elephant training camp before it)
The drive to the falls are an experience in itself. Curvy & narrow roads lined with loads of rubber, banana & palm trees among others in a forested area. At some points you will also see the clear river flow by. This is nature at its very best.

We visited on a public holiday, so there were hoards of locals & understandably so. The place is huge & apt for a family outing. The entry fee is nominal as it is managed by the forest department & there is ample place to park. The actual walk to the falls is about 5 minutes, but seems to take forever as the road is lined with uneven stones.

There are a couple of different types of views here - one of the plains before the falls & the other being the full view of the fall. In the first one, there is slowly flowing water & tracts of still water as well - good for a nice dip. It was a very hot day, and we wondered how people could spend so much time in the open sun in water, but lo and behold on dipping the hand in it, found the water to be pleasantly cool. For the full view of the fall, there is quite a steep muddy & stony walk downhill which takes about 10 minutes each way - so make sure you carry walking gear.
There are barricades put up both at the fall and before it & guards manning it to stop over-zealous souls from entering, so you wont be able to stand below it per se, but it still fills serene.

You can easily spend a couple of hours by the fall - discounting the actual travel times - to & from it. A number of resorts & restaurants on the way - and some of them give a beautiful view of the falls as well.

Beware of the monkeys who line up on the walk to the fall - they are thieves and will snatch juice bottles & bags of food from passers by.
