“We had their best room - acceptable”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

I am sure that the below reviews are correct from what we saw. But when we arrived, we arranged to get their best rooms - I think their are 4 of them and they proved to be adaquate. The rooms only has electricity in the evenings, and no heat. But very adaquate bedding to keep warm at night. The restaurant was surprisingly good for both dinner and breakfast. I agree to pass on their basic rooms, but our upgraded room was adaquate, especially when you realize where you are in rural Tibet

Room Tip: Get the best room in the house - it is worth the difference.

This is not a good spot to stay - worst hotel I have ever been to and I have travelled a fair bit in poorer countries. After being shown room, we asked our guide and driver to drive to the next town. After a late lunch at this hotel(which wasn't too bad except for the beggars constantly coming in with empty bowls trying to take our food off us) my wife asked to use the toilet and was told to go to the paddock out the back with all the rubbish as the toilets were "under construction". Definitely a place too be missed but after a long drive from Everest Base Camp and if you are not well is the best option in this small town.

Excerpts taken directly from our travelogue web site:

It took us a little while to find someone who spoke English at the Snow Leopard but eventually we succeeded. We were shown two twin rooms that were side by side. Sure enough they had toilets, a sink and a bath. There was also a TV and the rooms were much warmer than the ice box (Amdo Guest House) further down the road. We instantly decided we would move to this hotel. They wanted 530 Yuan for the two rooms. We were happy enough as we couldn’t bear the thought of staying at the Amdo Guest House. We walked all the way back to Amdo, found our guide, Tiki, and told her we wanted to move to the Snow Leopard Hotel. She and the driver helped us shift our gear over there. Later, Tiki refunded us 130 Yuan for the triple room down the road. We felt the 400 Yuan difference was worth it………………..….There is no heating at the Snow Leopard Hotel plus we were told the shower would not be working. The power comes on at 7 p.m. The staff supplied us with huge thermoses of hot water so we could make ourselves cups of tea. …………….……..Later on as it turns out, the water in the sink was not even hot enough to wash in so we were quite glad to have thermos water to freshen ourselves up with - we had not been able to shower the night before! ………….…….The room was exceedingly basic but even so, it was way more comfortable than the Amdo Guest House. We couldn’t imagine why anyone would be given accommodation at Amdo when the Snow Leopard was much better……………..……The Snow Leopard Restaurant is very decorative inside, as are most restaurants in Tibet. In the centre of the room was a row of bain maries but the heating wasn’t on underneath them. In hindsight I think they would be used only when big groups were booked in for a meal. We were ushered to a table and shown a menu. We all had pleasant enough meals but none of us finished our food. We were exceedingly cold even in the restaurant.............….Back in our rooms we tried out the TV but couldn’t get it to work. We found a bowl in the bathroom and used it to soak our feet in some warm water from the thermos but it didn’t make much difference to us - we were still freezing cold
Added later: We've since learned from a Trip Advisor member that there is a reasonable place to stay at New Tingri (also called Baber). It is called the Sunrise Hotel. The email address is: pyoungdue@hotmail.com and the phone number is: 13989922770. Apparently the rooms at the front are quite decent and have an en suite. New Tingri is not far from Old Tingri.

More correctly known as “Snow Leopard Guest House” A somewhat mediocre establishment but maybe the best in this area. Rooms were dame, don’t hold you breath waiting for hot water (or any water for that matter). Room had a western style toilet but it was blocked! Carpets were damp. However, the restaurant was not too bad with some cute English translations on the menu “Beef with meat”, Twice cooked pork” etc and the food was good. Cold at night and electricity, generated by a diesel generator in the compound, goes off at night so be prepared with a torch or two. Good early morning views of the mountains and worth the walk to nearby Tingri and the small hill above it to the South of the main road

Room Tip: Try for one of the newer rooms (western side of compound). Chek for running water etc.

It's a strange place at the Friendship Highway half a mile east of 'downtown' Tingri. When you stood in a couple of other places around, this is not the worst! But it doesn't mean it's good. It starts with a missing door handle, vacuum cleaners seems to be unknown - it's not the carpet but lints below your feet - astonishingly the bathroom was quite clean! They've got hot water and a generator (power lines all around but no electricity past 8:30 p.m.?).
The restaurant is ok, the meals are nothing special, but warm (that's important when it is freezing cold out there)!
But the view is unbeatable!

This is your only option if you are headed towards Nepal and have just visited Everest. Our guide made sure we had a "newer" room. You have to remember where you are. This is not a luxurious trip by any means. The location is amazing. To be able to stand outside your bedroom door and see Mount Everest is awesome. I moved my room chair outside to read sit in the sun and look at the view. This Is the only positive about this hotel. Someone will come along one day and build a 5 star hotel in this location. Good thing I travel with a lot of Lysol wipes and a travel size can of Lysol spray. I disinfected the vanity, sink and toilet as it had nit been done in a while. I always travel with a sarong just in case the towels are questionable. In this case It was a welcomed amenity. Hot water never came on. Used canister of hot water to waash with. Thank goodness there were extra blankets in the cabinet. No heat in room. Door did not close properly so there was a huge crack that let in breezy night air. Had to rig the curtain to cover the door with band aids as tape. It was 40 degrees in room slept fully clothed. Took hot water from canister and filled empty water water bottle and put under the sheets with us. Really warmed the bed up. We liked the food at dinner. Have a couple of Lhasa beers at dinner it will take the edge off. And maybe you will remember why you are sleeping here.

Room Tip: Ask for a newer room

Tingri is out in the middle of nowhere so don't expect much. There is no heat in the hotel. The shower is communal. The hotel is completely dark at night, so bring a flashlight or head lamp. The restaurant is decent. They give you a thermos of hot water when you arrive. Some of the hotel rooms can be difficult to unlock since some of the door handles have broken off. At least, it's very quiet at night since you're out in the country. Stay here if you can tolerate a rustic, cabin-like hotel stay.
