“An Absolute Pleasure!”
Reviewed January 10, 2011

A group of 4 of us stayed in the self-catering penthouse, and what a pleasure it was. The whole apartment has been very well thought out with plenty of space for up to 6 people. The beautiful private balcony featuring its own BBQ has breathtaking scenery, the lounge is comfortable and the kitchen fully equipped. The 2 bathrooms were spotless. The bedrooms are large with extra-long beds, and good quality linen. The location is perfect for exploring the Clarens area and being on the village square allowed us to walk virtually everywhere we wanted to be. There is a well stocked gift shop, restaurant and health day spa on site. The staff went out of their way to make sure that our stay was memorable. A word of advice, there are no banks or major supermarkets in Clarens and the local cafes are expensive for groceries. It could be a better idea to bring supplies with you or stop to do your shopping in Bethlehem on the way through. The chemist is also very small so make sure you have prescribed medicines with you. The whole area's water quality is a little dubious, but Red Mountain House supplies complimentary bottled water which was very welcome. This is set to become my establishment of choice whenever I visit the Eastern Free State.

Was quite dissapointed. Noted as luxury and was relatively expensive. Room had a few touches to give the first impression "luxury" look. Checked in after hours - collect hidden key - no information in the room on where to eat or what to do in the town. Was told had a room with mountain view - from the room had good view of the stairwell and from down the passage - yes could see the mountain.

Charming simple rooms above a restaurant/bar and curio shop on the main square in the centre of Clarens. Welcome Sherry and Chocs on arrival and replenished every day was a nice touch. Open log fire, although it was still warm enough for us not to need it - the underfloor heating was quite sufficient! But Clarens is 1000m above sea level and gets cold in winter, so a very nice ammenity to have. Breakfast should be served in Vito's Restaurant downstairs, although on 2 of our 3 mornings we were directed to another restaurant a min or two walk away with a pre-paid voucher in hand. No problem for us but you should be aware that this is, I think, a common occurence with the towns restauranteurs sharing the breakfast burden for all local B&Bs. Overall a very comfortable stay in a delightful location with spectacular views. Rather on the expensive side for an SA B&B but still good value if you have £ or $
