This was our fourth holiday on Uist and we have eaten at The Polochar on each occasion and stayed there three times.
The rooms have been upgraded with new windows and smart bathrooms. The floors still creak as they should in such an old inn and the staff are as charming and helpful as ever. The setting is magical even when the wind howls and the rain belts against the windows.
Unlike some of the reviewers, we have found the food inconsistent. When it is local produce, cooked and served simply (eg. scallops), it is delicious. If it is roast beef or duck or fancy puddings, it is not so good. Having said this, we have not found a better restaurant in the area.
Breakfast is consistently good.
This hotel feels like an old friend and are certain to be going there again.

We booked a Superior room which looked out over the sound with beautiful views.
The room was excellent and spotless; the bathroom was also splendid, with a decent shower; the kings size bed was very comfortable with good linen; breakfast was not the best we had in hotels we had visited but was very satisfactory. The manager and staff were all very attentive. So far, so good; in fact, much better than good.
The snag was that smokers from the bar congregated outside the lounge bar and were very loud and boisterous. Smoke drifted into the window, left open so we could here the sounds of the sea; so we shut the window to keep out the smoke but, sadly not the noise, or the noise from the lounge bar up until midnight, when it closed, and for another 30 minutes or so while the bar was cleared and customers dispersed. Such a shame about the noise.
If we returned, we would happily chose this hotel, for the great qualities it has but would be discerning about rook location.

Room Tip: A room that is not over the bar might reduce the noise problem but may also not have the view; best to check with the hotel.

We ate dinner here during our stay in Lochboisdale. Our host at the B&B had booked a table for us, and this is necessary to ensure a table. The meal was delicious and highly recommended. My husband had scallop on black pudding for a starter and the scallop was enormous and very tasty. We both had a main of chicken stuffed with haggis in a whiskey cream sauce with fresh vegetables. The vegetables were very fresh, and the chicken delicious. This restaurant could take advantage of its isolation and lack of competition, but what we experienced was quite the opposite. Definitely give it a try.

The food at this inn is fantastic, and the location is very good with views over to Barra and Eriskay.

Our room was very small, but we had been warned of that before we turned up, and the rate for it was reasonable. One minor point is that the extractor fan in the bathroom seemed to be pulling in cigarette smoke from somewhere, as the bathroom stank of it every time we switched it on! The staff were apologetic about this when we mentioned it at check out.

Room Tip: Don't go for a petit double room if you are tall!

Our third visit. Very good food and accommodation plus fantastic coastal setting. Staff are very helpful and friendly. If the weather is good, superb sunsets over sea. Handy location for ferries.
Distances can be deceiving on the islands with many side roads to the machair.

Room Tip: Choose a full size room. Small ones are of same standard but a little small.
