I actually passed this place by actident back in April at which time they were fully booked! Nevertheless, both Alan and Annabelle promptly guide me to another recomendable B&B.
This time around I was fortunatlly booked from home, and really got the fealing of the place. Starting with a warm and hearty welcome upon arrival, the help setling into the rooms, and not least the grand full breksfast the next morning (with plenty of hot coffe)
Hope to see you soon again.

Every year the Castle Gig Rig's crew is hosted by Alan and Annabelle during the Biltong Festival. It is the only place to stay in Somerset East and this year I took my wife and son along even though the weather did not play along during the festival. Fortunately I went on my second fly fishing trip (an absolute must), guided by Alan, and we had the perfect day to have me catch my first ever trout! Thank you once more Alan and Annabelle. It is truly my highlight out of the 40 plus weekends we're on the road per year. See you soon.

What a gem of a place, and what a surprise to find a thriving community in Somerset East. The Angler and Antelope is just superb - totally unique in that the bar and dinning area are located in the old RC church on the property (deconsecrated in 2000) and the fly fishing shop is appropriately situated in the confessional wing of the church.
The original old residence has been totally refurbished and accommodate the 6 bedrooms which are superbly appointed, and fit so nicely with the historical period, but have all the mod cons that make it unbelievably comfortable. In fact the attention to detail is superb - imagine not having to ask for a 2 prong plug to recharge your mobile/ ipad!!! Free wireless - spot on. Beds are extremely comfortable and roomy. Bathrooms are large and beautifully set out.
The owners Alan and Annabelle are great hosts and have a long established history with the area - Alans family arrived in the area in the early 1800s!! Alan is a specialist fly fisherman - in fact he hosted a fly fishing series that was flighted on south african television not so long ago. They know the area backwards and can arrange trips accompanied or not.
Its really a GEM - certainly worth going back to.

We have watched Alan and Annabelle build their dream over the last seven years and it is looking absoltely fantastic. Their attention to detail, unbelievable hospitality and delicious cooking, make this B&B a must visit if you are ever in the somerset east area. Unfortunately we did not have time on this visit to tap into Allan's vast local knowledge and fishing experience, but we will definitely be back. Well done to Allan, Annabelle and Matt. Keep it up, we are very proud of you!!!!!!!

What started out as an overnighter en route from Addo National park, turned into an excellent two night break. We wish we could have stayed longer.
Alan, Annabelle and Matt made us so very welcome and the very spacious rooms, located in a tastefully converted, traditional turn of the century residence, were absolutely first class. With many original features, such as Oregon pine floor boards and doors, it was the massiveness of the rooms and the attention to detail, that really impressed. The bathroom alone, with a walk in shower, and a roll top bath, was bigger than most guest house bedrooms we've stayed in!
Meals are served in the converted church that adjoins the residence. Annabelle's Karoo lamb shanks were delicious.
Alan is a top fly fishing guide and guru, but we simply enjoyed the local countryside and attractions. The hike up to the waterfall is not to be missed, so too a visit to the town museum. But, the jewel in the town's crown has got to be the Walter Battis gallery. Here you are privilged to see many of this enigmatic artist's brilliant original work alongside that of local artists. Don't go to Somerset East and not visit this gallery. It is a national treasure.
We liked everything about the Angler and Antelope, and Somerset East itself. We shall return.

We decided to spend a weekend exploring Somerset East and dicided to spend two nights at Angler and Antelope. We booked the selfcatering Fisherman's Cottage as we have two small kids and needed the extra space. The decision was spot on. I don't know when last I had such a great sleep. Goosedown duvets and mohair blankets, perfect for a cold night. Alan, the owner, showed me around the 4 start guest house and I was kinda disappointed that we didn't make the trip without the kids as the rooms were stunning. The only disappointment of the weekend was not booking a flyfishing outing in advance as Alan had prior an engagement and could'nt take me. Next time I will make sure and book.
