“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2007

Our stay at Casa Portagioia came near the end of our 18 day Italy vacation during the height of wine harvest season. Unfortunately, we only booked two days at this gem on a hillside in a hidden valley near Castiglion Fiorentino and wished we had stayed much longer. Indeed, the facility was so pleasant in all aspects that we dispensed with the usual sightseeing planned on the itinerary and spent an entire day at the pool basking in the glorious sunshine overlooking vineyards, olive groves and distant Tuscan agriturismos interrupted only by the incredible lunch that Marcello whipped together. The pomodoro pasta and bean mixed salad we had was as good or better than anything served us at any of the restaurants during our trip and enhanced by the spectacular panoramic vistas which surrounded our outside flower laden dining terrace area. Breakfast was as good and varied as all reviewers have mentioned. Our room was well equipped and a delight with every detail well thought out and delivered. We too were subject to Terry's offbeat "dead heading" directives, but as other travelers have noted, the grounds were so well maintained, that our requested kabutzlike labor was completely unnecessary. Both of the restaurants recommended for dinner by Terry and Marcello in Castiglion Fiorentino and Arezzo were winners. We found our hands on hosts to be extremely warm, engaging, funny, accommodating and informative, but not at all intrusive. This is the perfect place to stay to chill for few days near the end of a hectic whirlwind Tuscan visit. We truly regretted having to leave.

This place is by far the Best place i have ever been... small quiet and unbelievable full off life.. terry and marchello the owners of this little piece of heaven in the center of this wonderful tuscan valley have a little piece of heaven in their hands and are doing a fantasic job with it.. Me and my now husband got engaged there and although we were only there for 3 nights we fell in love. with the scenery, the people, the incredible breakfast and homecooked dinner and just the life. its amazing to see how peacefull life can be and the simplicity. i would highly recomend this place to anyone.. there is not one bad thing i could say.. the owners are extreamly accomidating and helpful. they rented us a car and had it waiting for us at our villa. they picked us up from the train station and brought us to their home... the counry side took my breath away. the sunflowers all in bloom were something i still dream of today . i highly recomend staying for marchello's dinner.. what a treat.. the small town of Castiglone Fiorinto is so cute .. you get lost walking around but find the cutest little things... we had one of the best pizzas there..
all in all the best trip i have ever taken and highly recomended...
we will go back.... its an absolute must...

We found Casa Portagioia very relaxing. The hosts Terry and Marcello were extremely friendly and helpful and the breakfasts delicious with a wide choice of food.
The swimming pool was immaculate as were the beautiful gardens and the views from all around were breathtaking.
The rooms were very clean and linen and towels changed daily.
Everthing was of a very high standard.
Marcello provideds delicious light lunches on request and twice a week extensive and delicious dinners.
Wine provided is very reasonably priced as is the mini bar in the rooms.
It is very well placed to visit local villages or cities such as Florence and Terry has plenty of helpful advice as to where to visit and how to get there.
We can heartily recommend visiting their lovely Casa Portagioia.

We had a fantastic but all to short stay at Casa Portagioia. The setting, grounds, garden and house are all beautiful. Rural, but in a great spot for day trips by car. The room was quite spacious, very comfortable and well appointed, with all the modern comforts, including satellite TV for those inclined. Better still, grab a book and find one of the many sitting areas outside and soak in the Tuscan sun and atmosphere. Terry and Marcello are a delight. Marcello's cooking is wonderful and Terry's sense of humor is hilarious. Would absolutely stay again, only this time longer.

Although technically not an agriturismo, we found Casa Portagioia, in the countryside outside Castiglioni Fiorentino and 20 minutes from Cortona the perfect location for our Tuscany stay. For our family of four we rented a one bedroom apartment for my husband and I and a separate double room with breakfast service for our young adult children. The rooms were beautiful and the provisioning for the apartment of local foods was ample and of the best quality. Terry's wine cellar had anything you could want and Marcello's cooking was excellent.

Amidst the olive grove and vineyard are gardens, with fruit trees,(delicious figs) roses and lavendar all lovingly kept. Terry will jokingly offer to discount your rate for some dead heading in the garden. But there are very few dead heads to be found. I tried.

After a day of hill towns or designer outlet malls you can come back to the beautiful pool which is crystal clear and the perfect temperature for a warm day.

Marcello serves a 5 course meal two nights a week. I'll never forget our dinner on the terrace with our two kids. One in college and the other almost out of the nest, Terry & Marcello made a very special night that we will all remember always.

When I think back to my 15 days in Italy, Terry & Marcello and their beautiful Casa Portagioia come to my mind first. The other handful of guests were mostly return visitors, I hope that I may return again too. See their very thoughtful website, www.tuscanbreaks.com.

What can you say about Casa Portagioia? For a start, their website does not do them justice. The setting is truly spectacular, the rooms excellent and the overall experience simply Fabulous.
Terry and Marcello are consumate hosts leaving no stone unturned in their quest to make your holiday memorable. Ours certainly was and we shall return in the not too distant future to do it all again.
A car is a must however as the hotel is in the middle of nowhere which only adds to the peacefulness of the surroundings although it is only a short distance into the nearby town of Castiglion Fiorentino or to Cortona or Arezzo.
Further afield are Florence, Siena and Assisi which are all well worth a visit.
All in all we had a tremendous stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Finding a place to stay in a foreign country is never easy, especially when you find the property on the internet, do not have personal recommendations, and tend to be somewhat picky to boot! Thus, we arrived at Casa Portagioia with high hopes but ready for anything. All I can say is that this wonderful bed and breakfast exceeded our expectaions in every way. The property is located in southeastern Tuscany, not far from Cortona. It is a little bit of a drive (about 10 minutes) off the main road and nestled in a beautiful valley. The room was very spacious, immaculately well kept, and had beautiful views. Our hosts, Terry and Marcello, were consumate professionals. They made it all look so easy despite the hard work involved on their parts to make our stay as comfortable as possible. They were full of great ideas for touring around, made reservations at any restaurant or museum, and catered to us in every way. Breakfasts were incredible......assorted cereals, eggs, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee prepared any way we liked, and more. Marcello cooked dinner one evening and we were very glad we were there for that. The food was excellent! It was a magical night. The property is overflowing with flowers, is also immaculate and the pool was absolutley beautiful.

It is very likely that this was the best B & B we ever stayed in and would highly recommend it!!!
