“A very good place to discover southern Tuscany”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

We were eight people spending a week in villa La Guardata, one of the Casali properties. The ancient perfectly refurbished farm house is very clean, very well equipped and offers an amazing panoramic view on Castiglione and the Val di Chio. We were very satisfied and can easily recommend a stay in La Guardata. While being there, try also the bisteccas at Ristorante Muzzicone in Castiglion.
La Guardata is also a good starting to discover the great towns of Arezzo, Cortona, Montepluciano and Perugia, all of them within a 45-minutes drive. But, Lidia and Roberta, could you please, please, do some repair work on the access road, which is really a bit ...bumpy?

We had the pleasure of staying in Villa San Martino for one week this spring. My husband and I travelled with our three children ages 2, 7 and 10, my Father in Law and our good friend. The house was perfect for us. My Father in Law enjoyed the privacy of the separate sleeping cottage and the home was perfect for the rest of us with a private bath in each bedroom, comfortable beds and beautiful grounds. The swimming area was wonderful for the kids and the yard had plenty of space to relax and enough room to play soccer with the kids. The private location of the home is breathtaking with amazing views of the Tuscan country side. We enjoyed spending time exploring the surrounding towns and loved to come "home" at the end of the day to enjoy a glass of wine outside. Roberta and Lidia were very helpful in answering any questions that we had. We enjoyed our tour of the vineyards and the wine tasting. They also arrange a private cooking class at Villa San Martino for my 8 year old daughter and I which we will remember fondly forever. (I am trying to recreate the Ragu sauce that we learned to make as I type this review.) Our experience staying here was perfect and I look forward to returning someday. Cheers Lidia and Roberta and I hope that you find the golden sheep someday!

Today is the second last day of a week that my family and I have spent at villa San Martino (one of the properties within casali in Val Di Chio) and I felt compelled to post a review. It has been without doubt the best place we have ever stayed in. It is actually hard to condense all the things we have loved about the villa into this review.

Starting with the physical location, the villa is one of those rare properties where the photos on the casali in Val Di Chio website don't do it justice. It seems like the garden has been improved since she photos were taken. In any event, it is an incredibly beautiful location and the house is very large, very functional and gorgeous to look at. The outside terrace, where the pool is, has an incredible view down the valley (as the house is set high in the hills outside castigation florentino). The garden is beautifully maintained and is filled with flowers. The pool is kept very clean, as is the house itself.

The house can sleep 10 or even 12, though I think having 12 people here would spoil the experience a little. We were a family of 5 and one of the things we absolutely loved was the peace and quiet here. We did a lot of exploring of local towns (like castiglion florentino, cortona, arezzo and sienna) and it was fantastic to come home from the heat, hustle and bustle each day for a swim and a nap. The house has a great system of shutters, doors and insect screens on every door and window, so you can make it as open and sunny or closed and dark as you like.

Because the house is about 10 minutes outside castiglion florentino, and also up a fairly steep road (partly dirt) you definitely need a car. Having a car gives you the freedom to see everything nearby and we found some beautiful winding mountain roads to go for a spin on only minutes away.

Lidia and Roberta, who run casali in Val Di Chio provide lots of very helpful local tips about restaurants, tourist attractions etc and the house book (which is provided for guests) has very detailed information about practically everything nearby. They have clearly spent a lot of time and effort getting things right and it shows.

Just so this review doesn't look like it was written by the owners, I thought I would throw in a couple of suggestions for improvements (they are not criticisms because frankly I think it would be nit picking to criticise anything). The two largest beds are doubles and it would be nice if they were queen or king size instead. The kitchen could also be fitted out with a few more implements, like sharp knives. I emphasize however that these are very minor matters and don't detract from the overall experience.

To sum it all up, villa San Martino is heavenly. I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone. When we ere next in Italy, we will be back.

We had two weeks in the La Guardata house managed by Lidia & Roberta who own Casali in Val de Chio. It was the best holiday we've had in years. A beautiful house in a very special and magnificent valley. The help and advice from the owners added to the quality of the trip. Castiglione is a pretty town but not over-exploited for tourism - still very natural. Lots of good restaurants in the area, and loads of good walking routes. Just perfect.

We had two week holiday in house called La Capanna with 3 and 1 year old children. House is located on peaceful hill and has beautiful garden where kids can play safely. House has own kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms and living room. There are also washing machine, dishwasher, Internet, TV, heating and fireplace. You can access shared swimming pool area which has amazing scenery over Val Di Chio and Castiglion Fiorentino. Swimming pool area is shared with 3 other houses that you can also rent. Outside the fenced garden area there are good hiking trails (for e.g. trail to Petreto).

We spent relaxing two weeks in Castiglion Fiorentino eating good food, swimming and relaxing. We visited also Arezzo (18km), Firenze (100km) and Cortona (18km). Val Di Chiana Outlet has great shopping possibilties and there's also playing ground and Carousels for kids.

People in Castiglion Fiorentino and Tuscany are easy going and very friendly. It does not matter if you don't speak fluent italian, they are always willing to try frienly conversation. We can warmly recommend Casali in Val di Chio and Castiglion Fiorentino. Our Holiday went great.

While we didn't stay here, we visited to do a wine and olive oil tasting with our family. Two sisters took over the operation from their grandfather in 1997 and have worked hard to give their wines a distinctly feminine touch in what tends to be a very male-dominated industry. The wines and explanations were outstanding and the olive oil was a special treat. Just a year or so from achieving organic certification, the owners are working successfully to create a niche. Definitely a highlight of our Tuscan vacation.

The hospitality and generosity of this gorgeous Tuscan escape and its hosts speaks through the delicious wine, amazing food, and wonderful company. I was fortunate enough to spend three months in Castiglion Fiorentino and spent much of my time at Casali in Val di Chio. The villas are amazingly clean and the breathtaking views make this place a true paradise. I absolutely cannot wait to come back here and bring my family and friends!
