“I think the owners should apply for a higher rating for the hotel”
Reviewed April 17, 2010

All we wanted was somewhere different to go for a nice evening meal and to stay over for bed and breakfast. Didn't want to pay a fortune for over the top extravegance and false hospitality. So when we found this "2 star" hotel with a special offer for half board it seemed ideal. Having read comments on this site regarding the rooms away from the main building being inferior our expectations were that we might not even get a "2star" meal and accommodation to match. That was not the case. In fact it could not be further from the truth. There was a warm friendly atmosphere from all the staff and the owners and a friendly, busy "country pub" feel to the bar area. The food was very god indeed with plenty of choice for the evening meal and breakfast. It might not be Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen but it was certainly well above its 2 star rating in our opinion. Yes, the rooms are basic, but they have everything you need and are clean and tidy. As for the rooms away from the main building,. they have been recently refurbished and from what we seen, we would have no problem in booking one next time. I say next time because we will certainly return for more. In fact we are going to book one of the rooms for a birthday surprise treat for a family member and a treat it will be I'm sure, might even return with them ourselves The overall experience of our stay at this hotel was far above the 2 star rating...Maybe the owners should re apply for a higher rating ? I would reccommend this hotel to anyone whether you just want a nice meal or bar meal in a friendly pub atmosphere or whether you want to stay for a short break or even longer, great location to relax and unwind with good bus connections for sight seeing, shopping in York if you want to leave your car, or you can drive north to some great scenery and historic places in North Yorkshire like Hemsley, Thirsk and Whitby.

My wife and I stayed for three nights - bed, breakfast and dinner in this charming village hotel. There is ample parking ( front & rear). We were allocated a room in the main building which was nicely decorated and clean. On the down side was the lack of a shower (bath only). The meals were very good and the dinner menu changed daily. Staff were helpful , pleasant and asked how our day went. We enjoyed our stay in the George and Yorkshire. We will be back.

Top of the line accommodations clean and modern and very quiet. Staff was very friendly and helpful and were willing to do laundry for us at a very moderate cost and ready for us the next morning. We had roast lamb in the dining room and it was the most tender, juicy and tasty lamb we had ever experienced. A really enjoyable stay.

We had a courtyard room, very shabby like a cheap motel. But good breakfast!

We stayed here for a weekend break. The location is good, in a lovely village close to beautiful countryside. The room (number 5) was clean, and the bathroom was ok, but the room itself was very small and dark, with no view. The bed wasn't long enough for my 6ft husband. The breakfast, and waitress service was fine.
Unfortunately we were met by a fairly charmless man, who was not forthcoming with information and didn't make us feel very welcome, which was a shame.
Do stay here, but avoid room 5, which judging by other reviews on this site, appears to be the booby prize!!

We stayed at the George because we remember that we enjoyed our previous stay almost 30 years ago and for the fact that it was close to York. The hotel is small and very quaint. It is rather tired and in need of a facelift but having said that we had nothing to complain about. Our room was spacious with a bath but no shower. Only a hand held shower that obviously could not be used standing up! There is free wifi internet access but only for 15 minutes as a trial. After this there is a charge which I personally think is wrong in this day and age.

The restaurant was empty both nights we stayed but the dining area in the bar was quite full, no doubt with people taking advantage of the 6.00-7.00pm offer of two main courses and a bottle of wine for £20. We ate in the Restaurant as we had booked half board. The meals on the first night were disappointing and were not worth the £25 charge indicated on the menu. The second night was much better as we learned that we could mix and match off the restaurant, bar and specials menu. My steak in particular was cooked to perfection with the juices running!

We caught the bus from across the road to go to York. This obviously saved the drive and also the experience of trying to find somewhere to park The cost of £4 more than made up for this and the stop in York is right in the centre of the city. There is however a good Park and Ride in place and can be reached along the A19.

We would recommend the hotel to anyone wanting a break in a small and friendly hotel, perfectly situated for York and other towns in the area. The staff are very friendly.
