Arriving from the airport, you drive through a rather run down Coron Town and it is somewhat of a surprise to see this gleaming new hotel and its huge welcoming wooden doors. The two Italianate wings of the building enclose a lovely pool area and, on looking around, you notice in particular the attention to detail - wooden carvings, interesting ceilings and light fittings. Our top floor room (spacious and well furnished) overlooked the bay with the dramatic cliffs of Coron Island in the distance. The staff are outstanding - efficient, friendly and professional. Although only open for a few months, occupancy rates seem to be high and it was good to meet the French owner for whom this has clearly been a labour of love. The quality of the restaurant food is very good though maybe, in time, the menu could be widened perhaps with some two or three course packages. Small criticisms include the poor lighting on the approach to the hotel - a little daunting if you are returning in the dark. More hotels of this quality are needed in the Philippines to attract the more discerning international tourist.

Room tip: Worth paying a little more for a harbour view

Corto Del Mar is a beautifully designed hotel. The location is strategic as it's near the jetty and public market. From the roof garden one can view the sea and enjoy a good breeze. Rooms are spacious and clean. The staff is friendly, helpful & attentive. Upon arriving from our island-hopping tours, they greet us & ask if we enjoyed our excursion. Room service is delivered quickly & with a smile. However, during the breakfast or dinner rush they are a bit understaffed. The food is delicious (especially the thin crust chili prawn pizza!) although pricey.

We would have liked more pillows though as 2 are not enough. We requested 2 additional pillows & towels too at no extra charge. Also, it would be very helpful to provide a sitting area in the room where one can eat dinner after a tiring day out. Similarly, a drinking glass in the CR would be very useful when brushing teeth. The water pressure is very good. The pool could use a little more cleaning as there were lots of dead leaves at the bottom.

Room tip: Rooms on the 1st floor have pool access and are easier to reach after a tiring day of island hopping, as there is no elevator with only 3 floors in the hotel

We dined at their restaurant twice, and both were good experiences. The restaurant was clean and smelled like baby powder! Food was served hot within a reasonable time, with ingredients that tasted fresh and well-prepared. Their rolls were soft on the inside, and crusty on the outside, and were very good with their bottles of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and chili oil (with a side of parmesan cheese). Their tanigue sashimi was great, and their hamburgers were home-style, with a well-seasoned, tender beef patty. I also ordered their Bicol Express, one of my favorite Filipino dishes, typically with taro leaves and pork in a chili-coconut sauce, but I was disappointed that it tasted more like binagoongan. On another occasion, we had their baby back ribs which were very tasty, but could have been more tender; and three of their pizzas: 4-cheese, pumpkin and bleu cheese, and the spicy chorizo. All pizzas were excellent, with a wonderfully light, thin crust, complemented well by their outstanding chili oil.
Their bar list was extensive, and had interesting items (cocktails with tamarind syrup, which I am fond of).
On our return due to a flight cancelation, we stayed at the hotel for a night. The rooms were spacious, and their bathroom doors were designed with glass panels of different scenes from The Little Prince. We enjoyed the pool, especially the deep end.
Areas for improvement include a doormat inside the room, and a space for footwear, especially since the pool area is surrounded by earth, and our tracks had the tendency to be muddy. My friend also cut her finger on the sink as she tried to retrieve the bar of soap from the stopper that was apparently very sharp. Efficiency of room service could also be improved, because the towels we requested (before dinner) took so long (arrived after we ate) considering our room was right beside the reception area. On the other hand, we appreciated that they accommodated our request for packed fruits before our flight, which was very early, and before the buffets could open, the following day. Perhaps, a wall on the other side could also be put up to prevent onlookers from the houses beyond the property, especially in the pool area.
Overall, this hotel was a breath of fresh air. It is a development, but it is not imposing and ridiculous for a small town like Coron.

Room tip: We were not able to see it, but we hear their roof deck is pretty. Maybe a room up there might be nice.

This is one of the more expensive hotels in the area but well worth the extra money if you can book a room. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. And while most hotels in Coron are subject to the brownouts, this hotel appears to be able to provide air-conditioning 24 hours a day, which is sometimes much needed during the hot summer.

The staff as well were very accommodating. They let us check into the hotel early and let us check in late as well. They were very friendly as well always greeting us with a smile.

I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone, the atmosphere, services and food were the best town. My only complaint would be the location, as its just beside the poorer area of town.
