“BEST place to stay in Coron”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

This truly is the BEST place to stay in Coron.

Was in contact with them shortly after I confirmed my flight. At first, I was hesitant because their package was a bit pricey compared to other hotels/resorts in Coron. Other options had much lower prices compared to Sophia. But I chose their package for two people 3D2N in their deluxe room with Coron Tour Package and Coron Island package with daily breakfast, use of pool among other superb amenities (with roundtrip airport transfers for two, at only 6,199 Php per pax all in. REALLY WORTH IT, I tell you.) because of the reviews here in Tripadvisor.

Kudos to their reservation staff for the most prompt responses to my email. May it be 1 AM or 6 AM in the morning or 11 PM at night. I would always receive a reply to my email in the most courteous way too. All my questions would always be answered in their email.

Arrived Nov 3rd in the resort. Airport was small and homey, felt great nonetheless. There were 4 of us in the van, which was waiting for us outside the airport. It was a 30 (? or less) minute land trip to Sophia's. Beautiful fields everywhere.

Loved the welcome drink, we were immediately accommodated once inside. Everybody who worked at Sophia's was so nice and courteous, with their smiling faces. Once inside the room, you will immediately feel relaxed with the aroma of Jasmine. The bed and linens were sparkling white. TV worked well. Complimentary water was ready too. Everything in the bathroom worked well. Towels were clean. So far so good!

Once outside since we were hungry from the trip, we ate at their restaurant. Tried their Sizzling Gambas which was gooooood. Their Tanigue was even BETTER!!! One of their staff even suggested options like if we wanted to eat outside, by the garden or by the pool!

We also walked to the other end of Sophia's were it's said that they will be constructing a new wing of their resort. It's a dock, (picture posted here too) where you see the beautiful ocean surrounding the area. Beautiful. The view is to die for.

Had the town tour in the afternoon, went to the town proper, then climbed the 724 steps up Mount Tapyas, the sunset was divine. Although tiring, every step was worth it. (Note to travellers, bring Water if you easily are the type to get thirsty!) Then another 724 steps going down the mountain. By this time, your legs will be kind of shaking in sync with your knees. (So actually there are 1548 steps if you add the going up and down part haha). We were taken to Maquinit Hot Springs after, perfect place to relax after the tiring steps of Mount Tapyas.

After day one, tried their pool and jacuzzi to unwind. There weren't much guests around so it's peace and quiet. The temperature was perfect. And to my surprise, there wasn't a time limit with swimming in the pool as long as the lifeguard was informed. Such kind staff!

And as if I thought there was no more surprises left, one of them approached us and asked us what we wanted for breakfast the next day. Talk about going the extra mile and superb service. Even asked us again where we wanted to have our breakfast. Everything you need, they will help you with it. Chose the Beef Tapa (delicious!) and the Spanish Omelette. Complete meal with fruits as well. Nothing more you can ask. Perfect breakfast!

We had the island tour the following day and everything was breathtaking. From the twin lagoons, beaches and everything. Make sure you have waterproof gear for this. If you have a shockproof and water proof cam (underwater cam), you won't regret bringing it with you. Everything you see is worth taking a shot. From the boat, beach, underwater marvels of nature. The lunch that comes with it is so sumptuous as well.

After the tour, we decided to eat dinner at Santinos'. Everybody talks about it. The only con is that because there are so many people, service is around 30-45 minutes, an hour max. But everything is worth the wait. The RIBS are heavenly, I tell you. MUST Try.

Definitely going back here soon. Typhoon Yolanda came as we were about to board our plane, it was literally zero visibility in Busuanga airport last Nov 5th, very scary weather condition to fly to. Flight was delayed by 2 hours because of it. Thankfully, we got back in Manila safe and sound.

Thank you to everyone in Sophia's for the most pleasurable stay we've ever had. Your service is more than 5 stars itself. Thank you Ms. Teresa, Joy, Jheda, and Alex. Reviews do not exaggerate. Everything in this resort is first class. Sophia's Garden Resort truly is the BEST place to stay in Coron.

-Nina

I was so glad we stayed in Sophia's, the in-house restaurant was awesome. The food was always fresh and yum! The mango shake is heaven combined with the fresh breeze that doesn't seem to go away. The service is impeccable as the staff were very friendly and were always welcoming. The beaches in Coron are to die for!

In terms accommodation and the beaches - Sophia's and Coron have my number 1 vote - definitely worth going...

We stayed at Sophia's between 17th & 21st December. The resort is absolutely incredible, i don't know what the management team here are doing with the staff but keep it up it made for an incredible stay!

Resort is immaculate and the staff cannot do enough to help you, asking what you want for breakfast every morning, and helping with anything that you may need during the day - i may be slightly biased as we actually got engaged here on our last night (see pictures of what the resort did for us!) but a big special shout out to Charmene & Peter who got the wheels in motion

They are currently increasing the size of the resort to include sea view rooms, i just hope that this doesn't change the focus that the resort clearly have to have to their guests

We will be back in 2014 all being well with friends and family, and look forward to seeing everyone again then

This resort is No1 on trip advisor for a reason, book now for your slice of paradise in Palawan

We stayed there for five nights around New Year's Eve 2014.
The room was spotless, very clean, with enough space to store your luggage. The bed is a bit too hard for our taste, but overall, it's a comfy room.
The pool is well maintained with a very nice jacuzzi which is a welcome sight after a day of island hoping.
The breakfast is very good, you must try the French toast!
The garden is beautiful, a restful place.
The staff is very friendly, a bit over the top, and that can be a bit overbearing at the end of the day.
The staff is there to help you organize tours or drive you downtown. The wifi only works in the common area. There were no electricity cut while we were there.
Overall, a very nice place to stay in coron, outside noisy downtown.

Staying at Sophias was so great. The staff was so helpful bringing food to the kids in the room while they watched a movie, thinking ahead and bringing ice water to us while we were swimming in the pool. The Manager and staff was constantly checking on us and helping up have an amazing stay. I enjoyed a massage in the room, which was very relaxing. I highly recommend this place if you want relax.

We spent our pre-Christmas holiday in Sophia's Garden while touring Coron. The staff are very accommodating and with few guests, the place is great for relaxation. Our group consist of kids and elderly. They really see to it that everything is well taken care of. If you are looking for great seafood, their chili crab is a winner. The sandwiches are also good. The other dishes like pork sisig, phad thai, chicken bbq, cream of mushroom soup are not that good. Overall, our stay in Sophia's garden is something we really enjoyed whether kids or elderly.

I had the chance to stay in to hotels Sophia's and La Natura, what make it easier to compare. Somehow I don't understand so many positive reviews. At the End the place is not bad and probably above average for an hotel in the Philippines but I found following downsides:
- just 2 sun lounges what make it difficult to catch a relaxing place at the pool
- room was very small
- bed is to short in case you are above 1.80
- window can not be opened since there is no mosquito net
- air condition is as loud as an truck
- in the night there was an animal above the roof of the room (probably a mouse)

In total the place is ok but I couldn't get a good sleep at night.

SophiasStaff, Manager at Sophia's Garden Resort, responded to this review, December 30, 2013
Hello Sebastian Z,

Thank you for taking time in writing a review about Sophia’s. We value every guest comments/reviews seriously. Apparently after reading your other reviews (comparing us from other Hotel) we realized your clear intention. We apologize if we didn’t meet your expectations on your less than 24 hours of stay in our resort.

With all due respect Sir, please allow me to address the areas of improvement.
1. This is to inform you that we will add more Sun Beds as soon as we add another swimming pool and expand the area.
2. For now all of our 8 rooms are measured 19 sq. m, and for sure we will make a bigger room with different categories once we build our 2nd Phase.
3. We had guests that is way taller than you but they didn’t complain about the length of the bed, however well make a bigger and longer bed when we build our 2nd phase though.
4. If you have told us that you want your windows open we could have provided you with
plugged-in mosquito repellents.
5. We regularly inspect our air condition unit and if you found it load you should have told us so that we can replace it with our back up unit. This is the reason why we ask our guest if the rooms are ok with them. And by the way the analogy is exaggerated.
6. Sophia’s is located where there are wild animals roaming around. Our Front Desk Operations is 24 hours, you should have informed us right away so that we can shoo the animal away.

Again, we appreciate your comments. And just to inform you that Sophia’s is not “just garden”, “It’s a Beautiful Garden that is landscaped by the owners love and passion to nature”.
