“Tranquil and welcoming”
Reviewed December 17, 2013

We stayed about three weeks after Yolanda struck. The damage had been mostly to trees and had been cleared before our arrival. The hotel was functioning at 100%. As for Coron town itself, there was evidence of damage to many trees and buildings but, with the characteristic resilience of the Filipino people, a lot of clearing had already been done and many buildings had been fixed. There is no need to be put off from visiting this beautiful area.

Sophia's Garden is a lovely place and the staff are friendly and cannot do enough to help. A peaceful location just a short trike ride from the town. Highly recommended.

We were here on December 14-16, 2013. We were hesitant to go so soon after Super Typhoon Haiyan and we were worried that the hotel may have been damaged or lacking in basic facilities. It was good we decided to still go because Sophia's Garden Resort exceeded all our expectations. It's not a fancy shmancy hotel but it is cozy, relaxed and very inviting.
Only 8 rooms in the entire resort so you know that the service would be impeccable. They pamper you with everything even before you think about them.
Coron itself has some fallen trees and some of the coral reefs have been damaged. But the beauty of the lakes, lagoons and beaches is simply breathtaking. The advantage of going when everybody else is hesitating is that we had almost all of the places exclusively ours. It really heavenly.
The people of Coron are very warm and hospitable, and the staff at Sophia's Garden Resort is topnotch proof why IT'S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES (IT'S MORE FUN IN CORON)

I would definitely recommend you visit Sophia's Garden Resort. It's absolutely perfect.

Room Tip: We stayed in Rooms 5 & 6 directly in front of the pool, and they were great. Other guests don...

I have been here last Nov 23-25, 2013, just couple of weeks after typhoon Haiyan struck Philippines, when our plane landed in Busuanga, I was like OMG what happened here, all the trees along the way to Town were all literally destroyed. But when we arrived in Sophia, it was like a totally different place, indeed very beautiful place, and even though the whole Busuanga (Coron) City is out of electricity due to aftermath of typhoon, inside the resort we didn't experience any problem with water nor electricity.

I have directly availed our 3D2N tour package with Sophia, and I think Sophia Resort have arranged it for us perfectly. There are 5 of us and we had 2 rooms. All of their rooms have one double bed and one single bed.

When we arrive in the resort, all of their staff greeted us with a big smile and a welcome drink, helped us our with our baggage. Followed by a city tour and hot spring till the evening, when we came back from the tour, their staffs greeted us courteously, and asked about our tour and even about our dinner, I requested for our dinner to be done pool side, and they agreed without hesitation and prepared the tables for us right away, Their pool is like 50 meters away from their restaurant but still there service is great, 1-2 of their staff is always around to attend to our needs, they even provided us fans beside the pool, and without requesting they gave us beach towels for us to use after swimming in their pool or using their jacuzzi. After swimming they would offer you to dry your swim wears for you. In the evening they would ask your orders for breakfast the next morning and when you will be eating your breakfast, and where would you like to eat your breakfast. Well for us we chose to eat in the gazebo in the following morning, and of course they agreed without any hesitation at all.

The following day we had a whole day island hopping tour, and great picnic lunch.

They have 8 rooms here, we had 2 of them near pool side, it was pretty quiet, and really clean, but there is a big spider in my room, but what would you expect from nature, and for me i didn't care about it.

Overall their Service and Value is indeed Excellent, I would give it 6 stars.

Room Tip: Only rooms near the lobby have wifi signal, while rooms near pool side are more quiet.

First of all, I'm glad to hear that the place suffered only minor damage from super typhoon Yolanda and all staff and their families are safe.

Stayed in this place from Oct 13-15 with my wife. The 8-room hotel has about 22 staff working on 2 shifts. Words are not enough to describe the superior service the staff to their guests. As soon as you step out of the airport the shuttle service is right there holding a placard of the names of their guests. The drive from the airport to the resort is about 30 minutes. The driver called the resort a few minutes before we arrived to gather the staff to welcome us at their reception desk. Froy, the manager, served us the welcome drinks.

The staff are very courteous andwill always anticipate the needs of their guests. In the morning, as soon as you step our you room, the staff no matter if they work at the garden, kitchen or reception desk, they will offer you coffee. They get your orders for breakfast the night before and will serve it at time and pace you prefer (in your room, at the garden, pool side, gazebo or at their beautiful dining room). When we came back from our Island tour, the staff offered right away to dry our clothes on their laundry drying machine at no extra cost. There was an instance when the weather was hot and humid while we are having our lunch, one of the staff was already on his way to provide additional electric fan before we can even complain. One of the kitchen staff, Darwin, even made a special flower arrangement on our dinner table with our names written on the leaves.

The rooms are spacious and clean. Hot water is available and air-condition, flat screen tv and dvd player are provided on each room. Hair dryer is available on request. The garden is well manicured and you can see the staff cleaning all day. We felt very safe and secured about the place. We don't even lock our doors when leaving our rooms for meals.

The resort is not huge but because there only 8 rooms, there is always a place to stay in the garden or pool area if you just want to relax or read a book.

My only complain is the unreliable internet and relative small portion of food they serve. Of course, I cannot blame the resort about the internet because it is a problem across the island, For the food, I don't mind paying a bit of more money if they will increase the size of the amount of their portioning.

Other that 2 minor things above, I would say this is the best resort experience we had so far in terms of service at a very affordable price. Kudos to Froy, Bea, Teresa, Darwin and the rest of the staff for making our stay very convenient and memorable.

And if I may add, our flight going to Manila was cancelled and the airline (PAL) checked us in another hotel for the night (fairly new, about 80 - 100 rooms with rates that costs more than Sophia's). Their service is nothing compared to what Sophia's can offer.

Room Tip: You can save if you can booked your tour packages yourself. There are a lot of flyers available at t...

I write this review hoping this place has been spared of the disaster that has struck Coron since I left. We were there a few days right before it hit. Sophia's is a very quiet garden resort that is near nowhere or no one but I personally liked it that way. When we are in the resort we see hills in the distance surrounded by wild green. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Coron is a place with very basic infra and with that in mind you will appreciate that many of the facilities offered in this resort can be considered an extravagance. If you are looking for that classy 5-star resort don't even consider Coron. Go elsewhere more developed. I love that there's this primitive feel to the whole place makes going there feel more of an adventure :)

The hotel itself was small, only about 10 rooms surrounding a small pool and restaurant. An expansion was being build and was expected to be finished in 2014. I cannot recommend this hotel more, I travel a lot in southeast Asia and have never had service like this! Fantastic door to door airport service included, just look for your name on the board outside the small airport! The staff ran to meet our every need, from someone walking you with an umbrella across the three meters of space that were uncovered, to the setting up of breakfast the night before so that it was sitting poolside whenever we were ready! They readily arranged rides into town at local prices (no cut for the hotel? Wow! About 50 cents US to ride to town). This place is on its way to being a lovely full resort, i just hope it doesn't lose the personal touch we enjoyed so much- I've never actually wanted to know the names of a hotel staff but after three days, my companion and I certainly did. I would definitely stay here again! They genuinely cared that we had a good time. Trust me, stay at Sophia's!

I have stayed in several high end hotels throughout the world. Sophia's is comparable to Four Seasons in service. This hotel and staff completely exceeded my expectations. I visited several other hotels in Coron and none came close. Sophia's is the best by far (thanks for the great service Darwin, Peter and crew !).

Sophia's was built approximately one year ago. It is about 1/2 mile outside of town and there is NO NOISE or pollution that you have near town. There are currently only 8 rooms but more to come next year. Great pool with Hot Tub. Food is OUTSTANDING (better than anyplace in Manila ! Probably the best I have had in the Philippines). You can eat in the great open air dining room OR various garden areas on the property. . Rooms are very comfortable with plenty of space. Bathrooms are very nice. Air Conditioning is excellent. Rooms are equipped with a Samsung Flat Panel and DVD player (DVD's available in office). Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Booking for local Snorkel trips / Coron Tour is easy with free transportation.

There is no access to a beach or the ocean, BUT neither does any other hotel on the island. If you want to go snorkeling or to beach, you need to book a trip (very inexpensive) on an outrigger. THEY ARE AMAZING !

Internet Access is spotty, but you are reliant on Satellite Coverage. After getting there, you should TURN OFF THE INTERNET and soak in some LIFE (CARPE-DIEM).

Day trips to various surrounding islands leave at 8:00 am and return at 5:00 PM. When you arrive the first day, take the Coron Tour (town, sulfur hot springs, stores, etc.) which leaves at 4:00 PM from the Hotel and returns at 7:00 PM. Then, make sure to book the Island Tours for the beaches, snorkeling, hiking, etc.
