The rooms are beautiful, it's very quiet, the staff was very friendly. The food is great try the cheese soup. They have a minus because you can't visit or see the mikes family's castle. You will stay in a guest house.

You will return back in time and imagine, using old pictures, a different world.
Do not expect a 4 star hotel, bath-gowns and slippers or mini-bar. But you won't care because you will have everything you really need.
You will enjoy a very healthy breakfast and then use the energy to walk or run in the almost infinite forest, gardens and (I think) 3 ponds.
You will spend the afternoons in the little tower in the middle of lawn.
You will relax in the evening in the pleasant warmth of the fireplace and read a book or watch a movie.
Far away from the city, noise or dust.
I have celebrated here my 30th anniversary and it was a special moment in a special place.

We stayed at the Machine House in Zabola for two nights as part of our week long trip through Transilvania with our 4 year old. This has been the best place we stopped overall and although it was not the most luxurious, but the charm of the place and the efforts of the hosts is what makes this place special. The village and the surroundings are utterly charming, it feels as if you traveled back in time to reach this location. The staff was very child friendly and helpful, making us sandwiches and tee to take away for our day trips. We stayed in the Red Room which with the benefit of an extra bed for our son was perfect for a family of free. Best memory: enjoying a book by the fireplace late in the evening and being offered a refill of my glass of wine by one of the owners that was happening to pass by.

The Machine House on the Count Mikes estate in Zabola seems to be getting a mention a week in the UK weekend press at present. It also figures on the very hip www.blacktomato.co.uk website. Once under the iron rule of the communist era, the estate has been dragged back by its rightful heirs from years of misappropriation to its original, isolated beauty of 34 hectares. The Machine House used to house the generators for the sanitorium which was functioning until as recently as 2005, but it's now a six-bed guesthouse with grounds to die for.

"Shabby chic" is the term used by its owners to describe it on their website. Actually, design-wise, it's far from shabby, as you can see from the photos of the 'Red room' that we stayed in, which comes complete with a freestanding, claw-footed bath. The lounge is a similarly comfortable and tastefully decorated space. You won't find flat screen TV or in-room telephones in the Machine House but it does have wi-fi which is free.

Zabola is pretty remote, so eating in is the norm. The Machine House's resident cook produces good, homely food that, whilst not exactly hitting any culinary highs, is tasty and filling. Wines seem to be limited to a local sauvignon blanc, a cabermet sauvignon and a merlot and all were eminently quaffable. Breakfast was a rustic offering of salami/cheese, tomatoes/peppers, bread, water, preserves and coffee. But service seems to grind to a halt once the cook has left for the day, meaning that anything you might want to partake of remains behind the locked kitchen door. Coffee/tea making facilities and an honesty bar wouldn't go amiss.

A more serious criticism is that our room remained unvisited by staff for the three days we were there. In our more paranoid moments, we did wonder whether this was because we were a gay couple. In some ways, the laidback attitude was a good thing, but it might come as a surprise to those expecting boutique-style luxury with service to match. Actually, for the prices being charged (70 euros per night during the week, a bit more at the weekend), one can't complain too much. And for most of the time we were there, we had the place to ourselves, which almost felt like being the owners of a rather wonderful country pile.
