We visited with friends staying from Turkey. Beautiful spot and well maintained steps. Quite an amazing history of the herring women carrying baskets on their backs up these steps and further. Very atmospheric place.

Very interesting and scenic going down the steps. Quite a trek. 330 steps down and then 330 steps back up. Café was very nice

We had this on our list to do whilst driving the NC500 but it wasn't on our official map and we did drive past before realising we must have gone too far and so came back. It was well worth the extra miles and we found it a great experience with great views. The steps are quite safe and it was very quiet so we could take our time and take loads of photos. Once at the bottom the water level was really low so we climbed in the caves for more photos. Once we climbed back up we ate outside in the fabulous cafe and enjoyed the views once more.

It is very difficult terrain so bare this in mind. However if you can mange the really steep steps then its worth a visit. Also a little cafe there.

First, The steps are not well sign-posted. They are about 7 miles south of Wick on the A99. We missed the turn and had to come back almost about a mile and a half back.

And it was worth it. The views are amazing. If you are lucky enough to bump into the local gentleman who maintains the steps, you will hear the fantastic history about the steps.

The steps are wide enough and the gradient of the descent is quite gentle and you can stay close to the rocks to feel safe.

Now, for the other part and for those who are not so comfortable climbing back up. You may feel a bit of strain. However, if you take it easy and stop every so often (looking back at the view, or take a picture!), you will reach the top without any problem. Make sure you wear sensible footwear
