We visited this hidden historic gem on our way back to Belgrade from our enjoyable tour with Serbia Inspired Tours. This impressive archaeological site is extremely well set up and located in a beautiful location looking out over the Danube. If you are in the area.....don't miss it!

This site was discovered in 1965 when Serbia was going to build a dam. To be sure nothing of worth was buried under the flooded area, they had experts search for anything of value. They found Lepenski Vir and dated the finds to 9000 BCE!! During this time period, human usually only lived to the age of 35 years and were short of stature. Hundreds of skeletons were found with no indication of death from diseases; some of these individuals lived to be over 60+ years and many were over 6 feet tall. If you can visit this place, it is well worth it. There is a nice film explaining the search process and they have moved all the artifacts to a protective building.
