We went there as a special occasion with my nephew from out of town. Expansive menu had been reduced to three appetizers and three entrees. No cocktails were available. The service was terrible as the two serving staff did not seem to have a clue, they either walked past or had to make multiple trips for the same item. Food was not up to the prior standard and was mediocre extremely slow coming and small portions. If one of us had not ordered the cheese plate we would have had to eat somewhere else on the way home. The Manager came over and spoke to us for over thirty minutes about his great vision for the restaurant although we never found out what that was. Although from the meal I would say high end small portions and high prices. For that to work they need a better chef and better service. I left $45 poorer for my portion and still hungry. The funniest thing was a waitress explaining that they were not serving oysters due to the red tide and the need to cook them to counteract this.Red tide was not in Fanny Bay that month and you can't cook red tide out. She went on to tell us the great vision the manager had, I would have been happy with good food and service and keep the "vision"

We arrived at our appointed reservation time, but the hostess had no record of our call. A table had just opened up, though, and we were instructed to sit at it WHILE THE WAIT STAFF CLEANED IT! We opted to stand instead of having food scraps brushed into our laps -- with a rag so dirty it left more debris than it picked up. The wait for service was long, the staff seemed bored and uncaring. The paper menu we were presented with had the previous day's date, but we were told that the specials were the same. The three of us who ordered the stuffed chicken breast agreed that it tasted like yesterday's leftovers. The "cream cheese and pesto" stuffing was a small smear of green in the middle of an overcooked, dry breast. We were not able to eat it, despite our valiant efforts. The "vegetable medley" consisted of seven small chunks of combined carrot, summer squash, and beet. When the maitre d' came to check on our table, we told him of the food quality and were offered a complimentary cup of coffee (!) Luckily we had some good laughs while watching each other try to masticate the cardboard chicken or the evening would have been a complete loss.

The changing of hands has lifted this lovely restaurant back to a being special. Most of the food comes from their own gardens, which are a treat to visit. The new chef's offerings are exciting, tasty, and a welcome surprise. The manager and team are refining ways in the hotel. We had a marvellous dinner with friends and will go back as soon as we can.

We were first surprised by the new menu offered to us since we had grown accustomed to HH fare (which has always been fresh and tasty). Seems since our last visit the management has changed and the objective of providing quality, local, fresh and organic choices has become even more the primary objective of this quality restaurant.
We truly enjoyed our meal and the masterwork of the new chef. HH is a local icon on Salt Spring which overlooks the harbor, offers a clean, bright atmosphere and touts a staff that is enthusiastic about providing diners with a delicious and healthy culinary experience. I highly recommend this restaurant. Serving breakfast and dinner. Sad they are no longer offering lunch because it has been my standard for lunch meetings in the past.
