Probably the best value in Playa Hermosa. Here’s what to expect:
Accommodations - We stayed in their “XL Studio”. The room was very clean, all lights and fixtures were serviceable. Floors are an attractive tile, appropriate for beach front accommodations. The air conditioning worked properly, was very efficient and kept the room comfortably cool. I was there a week and had the opportunity to check out the other rooms. All were maintained to the same high standard. The Cleaning Staff deserves a special mention for both their thorough job of cleaning each day and for the extras such as their sense of humor and towel folding art.
View – The hotel sits directly on a black sand beach with beautiful cliffs at the end.
Wildlife – As their website said, we were routinely treated to red macaws flying overhead and fussing.
Food - There is no restaurant at this hotel. They have a microwave oven, refrigerator and coffee pot in each room. The only place to get an inexpensive meal is at a “Soda”. One higher cost Soda is within walking distance, three lower costing (~$7 USD/meal with one beer) Soda’s were a 5 minute drive down the road.
Hospitality – Till & Lillie are exceptionally hospitable managers. Communications before and during the stay was excellent. Time spent with us recommending restaurants, sightseeing options, surfing options and directions went above and beyond
Honesty & Security – We were charged exactly what was advertised. We left a tip for one of the maids who did not take it thinking we absent mindedly left Colons lying around. Rooms all have safes. Clearly, if you were leave something outside it will likely disappear as in most every tourist destination. But I must say, several people left surfboards, towels, sandals and such out all day and no thefts were reported during the week I was there.
Guests – This is a hotel, not a surf camp, but due to its location many surfers stay here. When we were there, we were the only Americans. Most of the guests were surfers from Europe, everyone spoke English. Apparently members of the Professional Surfing Community stay at the Tortuga too.
Access to surf – You can’t get much closer to a Playa Hermosa surf break than the Tortuga Del Mar. However, we were there the last week of August and it was bone crunching surf. I was the only long boarder in our group. Hermosa is a beach break. The waves set up nice, several were short peelers and I got some great rides, but be warned, this is a short board break during the summer months. To get the most out of a surf session you must duck dive in order to get out. When Hermosa waves lay down it is for a very short period of time. I waited as much as twenty-five minutes for an opportunity to “sprint out” into the line-up. But Jaco is a 5-minute drive away. 90 minutes prior to high tide and 30 minutes after high tide in Jaco is the time to surf it for long-boarders and short boarders alike.
