“A peaceful haven on the west side of Lewis”

A well appointed restored blackhouse, with a multi-fuel stove, a large open plan living / dining / kitchen, and two fairly spacious bedrooms. The owner was very helpful during the booking process and also invited us to watch his sheep being sheared which was a lovely insight into the local community feel of Shawbost, where the whole extended family come together to help get the job done.

The beach at Shawbost is lovely and there are good walks along the coastal paths north and south. Shawbost is around 18 miles from Stornoway and there are no shops nearby so you need to get in your car to explore the island. There's plenty to see outdoors and the island is ideal for those who enjoy walking, wandering and exploring the natural rugged beauty of both Lewis and Harris.

The beds were comfortable; the kitchen well appointed; the heating system and hot water failsafe; the location good for an authentic experience of living in a small community on the west side of Lewis.

We would recommend a trip to Tarbert in Harris to the new distillery where you can taste both whisky and gin, and then visit the largest and best appointed Harris tweed shop on the islands. The beach at Luskentyre is absolutely stunning too.

Overall, the holiday rental worked well for us and our two black labradors who were also welcome to stay. It was also excellent value for money.

“Peaceful Cottage”

The cottage is on the west coast of Lewis with views to the sea and beach. The picnic table outside on the well kept grass was used everyday for meals, cups of tea and just to sit and listen to the silence. Yes we were lucky with the weather however it is in a sweet spot for many of the tourist highlights on that side of the island. The welcome was warm and genuine and the cottage has what one needs for an comfortable stay with good internet. I and my family enjoyed our stay there and would like to return one day in the not too distant future.

“Best of old and new”

Shawbost is a great place to stay when exploring the Isle of Lewis. There is one of our favourite Lewis beaches about a mile away which can be accessed from the car park at the south side or slipway at the north side. You can enjoy a walk, whatever the weather, along the beach and back along the 'machair' with it's beautiful wild flowers and grasses and the Loch at the other side.
The cottage is a great holiday space with a large dining table in the kitchen area and a couple of substantial sofas and the quirky pew surrounding the wood burning stove which is both a lovely feature and focal point to the room.
The exposed stone is attractive and the kitchen is well set out.
We found the darker twin room ideal for a child as the long daylight hours of the Hebrides summers can be problematic in getting them off to sleep.
Some Harris tweed features show the local creativity in attractive ways.
The bathroom has a shower and smaller sized old fashioned type of bath our wee one found fun to use.
Everything was very clean and we were warmly welcomed.
The heating is versatile to suit whatever the weather brings.
Car parking is more than adequate and a picnic table offers an al fresco dining opportunity with the weather allows.
This cottage is within easy reach of Stornoway for facilities and the Black house in Arnol. It is close to the Black house village of Gearranin in Carloway and the amazing culinary experiences of '40 North' Croft kitchen and the Verandah restaurant in North Bragar.

A lovely place to stay close to beautiful beaches. Difficult to find but had help from John's brother. Very well equipped with everything you could need except TV but WiFi fine.

Beautifully renovated cottage, very well equipped, including washing machine and small freezer. Everything was spotless. Plenty of towels etc. Amazing beach about a mile away, a nice walk or you can drive to it.
Owner very helpful without being in your face all the time. Beautiful island to visit.

“Comfortable, well equipped cottage with character in convenient location.”
Reviewed June 19, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

The cottage is well located and on the road to several of the historic locations - Callanish Standing Stones, Black House Village, Harris Tweed, Butt of Lewis. The crofters cottage is a treasure - comfortable, roomy, very well equipped and a part of the local history. The owners are friendly and most obliging. ... and Iain has a great sense of humour. He is a great communicator and helped with shopping advice and good directions before we arrived. Highly recommended.
